The first hero team Marvel introduced also seems to have the hardest time getting fans to remain loyal to it. Fox hasn’t been as successful with their other Marvel property and this reboot has been earning some very mixed notices. It will still likely be enough for it to top the box office, but it might be a tough competition.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first two films in the franchise weren’t very good. The trailers don’t suggest this one will be much better. This series seems to have gotten stuck with the worst writers imaginable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another comic book movie that will probably burn up the box office but I am in no great hurry to see.
Tripp Burton (TB): With a great young cast and an interesting director choice, this could be one of the more unique and exciting superhero movies of the last couple of years; this isn’t a franchise with a lot of movie success, though, so it could be awful also!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am getting tired of the Marvel universe and the myriad films from it every year. They are not bad, but there does seem to be a certain sameness to them after awhile.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While it might be nice to see Jason Bateman tackle a new genre, everything I’ve seen for the film make me question whether it’s really any different from every other similarly-styled film out there.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a low wattage psychological thriller to me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland, paint-by-numbers thriller, if you ask me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early word of mouth makes this sound like a pretty good thriller, if that is your cup of tea.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve never been a huge Meryl Streep fan, but even I think she’s coasting lately. This reminds me of those abortive musical/comedies she once made with regularity.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not everything Meryl Streep does turns to gold. This one looks like it will turn to dust very quickly.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t look like Jonathan Demme’s crowning achievement, but he has surprised us before
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Meryl Streep is almost always worth watching, even if the film is not that great, which may be the case with this one. It should be an enjoyable lark, but I hope she doesnโ€™t get yet another Oscar nomination that she doesnโ€™t deserve.

Wesley Lovell (WL): Aardman Animation is one of the strongest creators of animated content out there and I have absolutely no intention of missing this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): What is this, a movie for pre-school kids?
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my cup of tea, but lots of people seem excited for this!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Aardman films have all been fun, and this should live up to the previous ones. It is the film this week that I am most looking forward to.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have no desire to see Kevin Bacon play against type in something that looks so obviously generic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Kids in trouble movie looks like it could be a sleeper hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks dreary and familiar
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A kids gone wild film with a vindictive sheriff just does not sound that appealing to me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ll admit that I’m a bit intrigued by the content and the trailer that came with it. While I don’t expect it to live up to the impossibly high standards of Gone Girl, it could be a pleasant diversion.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): From the author of last year’s hit, Gone Girl, could be an under-the-radar success.
Tripp Burton (TB): Also looks dreary and familiar.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Adapted from the same author as Gone Girl, this unfortunately sounds like a reasonably botched production. Probably not terrible, but also not worth the time to watch it.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky coming of age film with limited appeal, I’ll pass.
Tripp Burton (TB): Nothing looks too exciting about this movie, which I had never even heard of until just now.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A strong debut film about an atypical coming of age drama should be good, but probably plays to a somewhat limited audience.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If you can figure out what’s going on from the trailer, then you’re a better person than I am. This looks absolutely dreadful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another quirky coming of age film. I was unable to find a trailer.
Tripp Burton (TB): This too looks dreary and familiar
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An atmospheric British film, beautiful to look at, but probably very slow paced. Probably worth seeing, but not as good as it hopes to be.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not a fan of the animation employed in the primary story, but some of the other animation efforts in the film are drop-dead gorgeous.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A thinking person’s animated film that should appeal strongly to critics. Its international collaboration should impress at the Globes. Oscar could jump on board as well.
Tripp Burton (TB): This could be an interesting film, but it seems to have a lot going against it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This appears to be a lovely to look at animated film that could nab one of the non-mainstream Oscar nominations for animated film. It definitely sounds like it will be worth seeing.
