Looking at the Weekend: Dec. 14-16, 2018

Three potential box office toppers release this weekend and, once again, Marvel appears to be likely to win it all. Mortal Engines is the latest attempt to building a major young adult dystopian cinematic franchise. Few have succeeded and while this one seems bolder and more effects-heavy than prior versions, it still looks to be the kind of film that disappoints and nosedives after the weekend. The Mule is the latest attempt by Clint Eastwood to remain relevant as a viable director. The film has been labeled as minor and while Eastwood has been a draw in the past, does anyone really want to see a dour movie about an old man smuggling drugs for the sake of his estranged family? Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the latest Sony attempt to make something out of its Spider-Man property and all appearances suggest that they’ve finally hit on something spectacular. It’s won numerous awards for Best Animated Feature and appears to be in the running for an Oscar nomination, and possibly even a win. That plus the animated component make this a very serious threat to box office dominance. Especially with nothing else in sight.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is interesting, though the trailer makes this look like your garden variety young adult dystopian adventure.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Survival of the fastest dystopian nonsense done with flair, but nonsensical nonetheless.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): People seem excited about this, but I do not know the backstory and think it looks sort of silly. Still it will boast great visuals.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Clint Eastwood has never been one of my favorite actors, though his directorial efforts are usually worth it; however, this one just looks dreary from start to finish.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Clint Eastwood’s latest looks like fun, but in a very minor way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Academy might give Clint Eastwood one last nomination for acting, but this feels like a weak entry for it.

Wesley Lovell (WL): When I first saw a trailer for this film, I was enamored with the animation. I’m still quite interested in seeing it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting take on the Spider-Man legend done with imagination and heart.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailers do not excite me, but the critics love this film. It looks to be a shoo-in for Animated Feature. I wish I could tell if it was trying for humor or not.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lebanon’s entry for Best Foreign Film starring a Syrian refugee child looks like a strong entry.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Great early reviews, but the trailer seems to have very little to do with the description of the movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Lars von Trier isn’t the director I once appreciated and this looks like sexist serial killer porn.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lars von Trier’s serial killer opus may be well made, but looks too sadistic for my taste.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not that into serial killer films, and this looks to be nothing above normal.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Major Oscar contender from James Baldwin’s classic novel looks compelling.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Once again, the trailer does little to interest me, but the early reviews make this sound like one to definitely see.
