Five major films release this weekend with three of them having the potential of landing in the top spot with one of those three having a tougher time thanks to its Wednesday opening. Mary Poppins Returns is that film, which should pick up quite a lot of money in the two days prior to the rest of the weekend’s new releases opening. That diminishes its chances for a weekend win, but the other two films will duke it out quite heavily to see which comes out on top. Bumblebee is something of a reboot for the Transformers franchise, taking the series back a few decades. It’s said that this one delivers what fans of the original cartoon had always wanted in a Transformers film, but couldn’t get because of Michael Bay’s possession of the director’s chair. There might be some residual frustration about the series, which could hurt Bumblebee‘s chances. That leaves Aquaman an almost clear line to the top of the box office. The other films in the DC Extended Universe have done well at the box office and this adventure promises to be the same.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from Wonder Woman, the DC Extended Universe has been something to dread.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another superhero movie in which the special effects overwhelm whatever story there is.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a weaker entry in the DC universe.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks far more like what I would want from a Transformers film than anything Michael Bay ever cooked up.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Effects laden film but seemingly with a little more substance than is typical these days.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am tired of the Transformers movies, but the critics seem to feel that this is the best of the lot, so it may be worth a look.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As worried as I am about how good this could possibly be considering the classic nature of the original, I’m still intrigued.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Charming sequel more than fifty years on seems to recapture much of the original magic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original film is one of my all time favorites, so I worry that this will feel a pale imitation. But I will go see it and hopefully not be disappointed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Jennifer Lopez hasnโ€™t made a movie I’ve cared about since Selena.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Variation on Working Girl looks like a decent showcase for Jennifer Lopez.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This feels like a remake of Working Girl, which was a decent but not that great a film to start with.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m fascinated by the premise even if I’m not a big Steve Carell fan.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a charming film based on the 2010 documentary about the real-life recovery of an attack victim.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The more previews I see of this, the less interesting it seems to me, but perhaps Robert Zemeckis will recover his touch as director.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Internationally acclaimed film set in the cold war of the 1950s is Poland’s Oscar entry.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does little but show off the beautiful black and white cinematography, but the critics love it, so it could be an Oscar and audience darling.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be a fun lark, but I don’t think it will be very substantive.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): South Korean film about POWs putting on a tap show during the Korean War is certainly something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I can see what type of film this wants to be, but the trailer does not make one root for anyone, so I doubt it will succeed.
