It’s going to be a fascinating weekend. With Rogue One likely to take the top spot for a second week, second place is up for grabs and I think the favorite would have to be Sing, which is the first major animated film in weeks and the Christmas holiday is a perfect release window. Passengers could be stiff competition, but both Why Him? and Assassin’s Creed will be lucky to finish in the top five.

Our Highest Rated Films: Sing; A Monster Calls; Julieta

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The computer game is interesting, but I’m not sure how well it will translate to the big screen. The trailers don’t give me hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sterling cast has me interested in seeing this video game adaptation which otherwise might not interest me.
Tripp Burton (TB): I try to avoid video game movies, and this looks like a good reason why.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): How did this many talented actors get involved in such dreck? The reviews of this video game adaptation are not the least bit kind.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from knowing a key plot point of the film, it looks like an engaging sci-fi romance. My interest, howeve, has waned a bit.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dreadful early reviews may not keep this thing from making lots of money, but it won’t get mine.
Tripp Burton (TB): I was really looking forward to this, although the buzz coming out is not sounding too strong. I’m still curious and optimistic, though.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’ve seen the trailer too many times now, but it looks fairly interesting. However, the reviews are not good so far.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky animated musical may be worth catching.
Tripp Burton (TB): I saw this at a sneak preview, and it is charming and entertaining. Good family holiday entertainment.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a cute and fun animated feature, not daring but still enjoyable.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): James Franco isn’t one of my favorite comedians and the film itself looks like a cheap cash grab.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Why bother?
Tripp Burton (TB): A great cast, but I’ll wait until it is on TV to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s a reasonable cast, but it sounds like a mediocre movie, and one that has been done better in the past.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While it might have some inventiveness to its story, I remain dubious.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Fascinating looking horror film, one of the few recent ones I actually look forward to seeing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a very effective horror/thriller combination.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are decent, but I am just not a horror movie fan.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Pedro Almodovar may have done better in the past, but one can’t pass up the possibility.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Almodovar films are always worth a look, though his recent ones not so much.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is being referred to as lesser Almodovar, but that could still make it one of the most interesting films of the year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am always ready for a Pedro Almodovar film, and this sounds like a decent one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have already seen this film and it’s absolutely wonderful. I have no reservations about recommending it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good-looking fantasy film could be Oscar bait for Felicity Jones’ dying mother performance.
Tripp Burton (TB): There was a lot of buzz for this film that all seems to have gone away, but I’m really curious to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure what to make of the trailer, though early reviews are decent and Felicity Jones is said to be a marvel. It should be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Peter Berg’s films have been blatantly off-putting and the trailer for this doesn’t dislodge that impression.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m not sure I want to see this Boston Marathon bombing film so soon after the real thing, but it appears to be expertly done.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my cup of tea, but like Peter Berg’s other films, this should be solid if not spectacular.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like an interesting film about the Boston marathon bombing. The last two pairings of director Berg and star Wahlberg have been worth watching.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I am not a Scorsese devotee. I don’t worship at the altar of Raging Bull, though I have liked most of his films. The trailer left me cold, which doesn’t put this in my must see column.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews of Scorsese’s film have been mixed, but it looks like something that should be seen anyway.
Tripp Burton (TB): I feel more obligated to see this than excited.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I don’t know how good this Scorsese film will be. The reviews are decent, but I just do not have that great an urge to see it.
