There aren’t a lot of options this weekend outside of holdovers. There are two new wide releases and only one of them has genuine potential to top the box office. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star as the frequently filmed Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The pair have done well at the box office in the past and there’s little reason to think they won’t again, though they may have competition from the second weekend of Aquaman.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t been interested in a Sherlock film in some time and this spoof doesn’t entice me either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a barely amusing spoof of Sherlock and the good doctor.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Iโ€™m not a fan of the movies these two do together, and this looks worse than usual.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I can’t bring myself to watching a biopic, even if a satire, of someone as odious as Dick Cheney.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Others may find something to like here, but to me it looks as revolting as the man it portrays.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not give away much, but I am really intrigued to see this and also to find out if it really is a comedy.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Nicole Kidman’s transofrmative performance is the only thing about this film that seems interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hard to tell from the trailer whether this thriller is good, bad or indifferent but critics seem to like it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer shows a very strong, almost feral, performance from Nicole Kidman that looks unlike anything she has done before. I don’t know that the rest of the movie will be as good, but I do want to see her performance.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like predictable pablum, but Armie Hammer could be enough reason to see it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The RBG documentary looks to be the better of the year’s two films about the Supreme Court Justice.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Coming on the heels of a well received documentary, this may not have much new to say about everyoneโ€™s favorite Supreme Court justice, but it should still be entertaining.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As a film about film history, this movie holds some of my interest, but probably not enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Poignant looking bio of the comedy legends will likely be a bigger hit on home video than in theatres.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has the possibility of being a good film, but the trailer and reviews make it look perhaps small and enjoyable but not exceptional.
