Of the new limited releases, Hidden Figures has the best chance of becoming a hit outside of the specialty box office, thus it gets my prediction for top new release.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like Elle Fanning, the trailer doesn’t make this seem nearly as good as it should be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer doesn’t really do anything for me, but word of mouth is good, so I’ll dutifully check it out.
Tripp Burton (TB): There is some Oscar buzz here, especially for the actors, but there are a lot other films I’m more excited to see first.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does little to impress me, but early reviews are strong and Annette Bening is said to be spectacular, so I am looking forward to this film.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a really good movie about an unlikely subject – women and mathematics at NASA!
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a solid Hollywood drama, but I’ll probably wait until the DVD.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a heartwarming and humorous look at some unconventional workers in NASA’s early days, and it is a picture that I look forward to seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Ben Affleck’s prior films, but this one seems to have gotten dumped, which isn’t a good sign.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This depressing looking film should be catnip for the Razzies giving Ben Affleck 3 awards the year his little brother wins the Oscar for Best Actor!
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m sad that the buzz on Ben Affleck’s newest film is so low.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Lukewarm reviews and a trailer that looks both violent and nonsensical do not really make me want to see this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I cannot stand Adam Driver, so even a Jim Jarmusch film doesn’t seem that appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Critically acclaimed Jim Jarmusch comedy-drama looks like it might be one of his best with a strong lead performance by Adam Driver.
Tripp Burton (TB): The word on this film is great, but Jarmusch isn’t always my favorite filmmaker so I’ll wait until I can catch it streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Word of mouth on this is great, and it looks to be a charming sleeper of a film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from the critical acclaim, the trailer just doesn’t inspire me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Critically lauded father-daughter German film remains the front-runner for this year’s Foreign Language Film Oscar.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of the best reviewed films of the year and I cannot wait to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not excite me much, but this is supposedly the front runner for the best foreign language film Oscar, so there must be something interesting to see.
