As usual, the post-Thanksgiving weekend is a dumping ground for wide releases no one expects much of. Krampus is the only wide release and it won’ likely trounce the latest weekends for Hunger Games, Good Dinosaur, Creed or possibly even Spectre.

Our Highest Rated Films: Chi-Raq, Macbeth, Youth

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be a great deal of fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’ll wait for this to hit the bargain DVD bin.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks abysmal.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A horror movie set with a bickering family, I think I will pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The most vital Spike Lee has been in years could be worth watching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Spike Lee’s films are always interesting even when the advance word is negative.
Tripp Burton (TB): I am always excited for a new Spike Lee joint, and this take on Lysistrata looks fascinating.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I would not have thought to put Spike Lee and ancient Greek mythology together, but this update on Lysistrata looks like an interesting film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It seems most dull from the trailers, but with that cast, it could be better than expected.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dreary looking Christmas movie with celebrants stuck in elevators.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a great idea for a movie, but the execution looks a little questionable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks like a misfire in all ways. Good cast in a silly movie where being trapped in elevators will magically change all their lives.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for Juliet Stevenson, this wouldn’t look that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): If the case for sainthood for Mother Teresa depends on this film, she’s gonna have a long wait.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m surprised it has taken so long for a Mother Teresa movie, and I wish it looked better than this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The idea of a film about Mother Teresa should make for a good movie, but the first reviews make it sound dull and boring. That is is a pity.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not even Dane DeHaan could make this look appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking take on James Dean seems destined to be lost in the year-end shuffle.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland biopic, and I’m not really sure why it is a story that needs to be told.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A biopic about James Dean should excite, but this looks tepid, and I am not certain that Dane DeHaan looks enough like Dean to pull it off.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not much of a fan of Shakespearean adaptation, but this cast is superb.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Macbeth on film has never been successful. This doesn’t look like it will break the curse.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a great adaptation of my favorite Shakespeare tragedy, and I can’t wait to see what this cast and crew have done with it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviews are mixed, which is a shame as Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard should be excellent in this film. The trailer does it no favors as it does not give much a feeling about the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A rather dull-looking spy thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A planned terror attack on London seems like a hard sell right now.
Tripp Burton (TB): Apparently this is a British TV show, but it looks like a crummy movie to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like it will feel more like a true life thriller than the James Bond or Mission Impossible franchises, but I am not certain if that will be enough.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be quite fascinating, but the trailer isn’t very inspiring.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): French slice-of-life drama might be a bigger hit on DVD.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a wonderful little film, although I will probably wait until it is streaming to catch up with it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A couple early reviews talk about a film dealing with racism, but the un-subtitled trailer gives me no idea of what it really is about.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting concept, but looks more life a trifle than a truffle.
Tripp Burton (TB): A bland looking film that people will probably love just because it is British.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Providing it sticks to humor, this film about the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret living it up on V.E. Day could prove an enjoyable lark, not deep but fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I can’t really say that any of this looks that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bleak looking Japanese detective story.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pretty run of the mill, but it might have enough interest to garner a watch when it is on DVD.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be listed as an update of The Searchers, but the trailer looks so bloody and violent that I have no desire to see this movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks can be deceiving and with this cast and director, that could very well be the case.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m skeptical of this one despite of or maybe because of all the hype surrounding it.
Tripp Burton (TB): Paolo Sorrentino is never boring, and even if it isn’t called his best film, it will still be worth experiencing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is always nice when a film makes good use of an older cast, though it sounds like their acting is better than the plot. That said, I am still looking forward to seeing it
