Since there are no new wide releases this weekend, it’s hard to know exactly which of the four new limited releases will perform best. All of them have potential, though the two bigger Oscar contenders are most likely to shine. Mary Queen of Scots is bigger and bolder than Ben Is Back, but the latter stars Julia Roberts, which could make things a wash. I’m going with instinct here to suggest Mary Queen of Scots since that film seems to have a much larger Oscar profile, but I could be surprised.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Something about this film looks utterly generic and not of much interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges doing their best thanks to Lucas’ dad, Peter, but probably not strong enough to land them Oscar nods.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The leads are supposed to be very good, but the film may sink under its own sense of seriousness.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I will watch anything with Saoirse Ronan in it and this looks quite fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A reimagined Mary and Elizabeth go at each other in the umpteenth version of their story with strong production values.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts two powerful actresses with meaty parts, but the trailer does not make the film seem that lively. It’s been filmed before, and hopefully this will be better than most of those.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Get Out-esque premise minus the thrills (in the trailer anyway), just doesn’t sound that appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A somewhat toned down Get Out, this could be interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are good, but watching a group of guys drink too much and be inappropriate just does not appeal.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Watch it for Natalie Portman. I can’t think of many other reasons to watch it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Might be worth seeing for Natalie Portman’s pop star, said to provide her with a chance at a second Oscar.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Once again the early reviews are good, but the trailer does not pique my interest in this film about a pop star’s tribulations.
