It’s hard to know just where audiences’ expectations will be. I expect this to be a fight between family audiences, couples and action enthusiasts with sci-fi geeks possibly playing the spoiler. Ahead of Valentine’s Day next week, I’m going to suggest that a lot of VD dates will be going on this weekend, which could give The Vow just the edge it needs.
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island: When a film like this comes around, you know it’s just an attempt to milk money from audiences.
Safe House: Can a silly action film do well in the winter? Sometimes, but I’m not sure this will be one of them.
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace: This will tell us if Lucas’ fans are still slavering over his opus or if they have cooled to his constant attempts to update and alter his 1977 classic.
The Vow: A standard-issue date movie releasing on the weekend ahead of Valentine’s Day. Who would have guessed?
Chico & Rita: It wasn’t an expected nominee for the Oscars, nor will it be an expected success at the box office.
In Darkness: It’s another foreign language Schindler’s List, though one that has gone solid reviews.
