Two vastly different demographics form the basis of this weekend’s race for the top of the box office. On the adult-only side of things, Fifty Shades Darker hopes to replicate its predecessor’s success when it opened two years ago to $85 million and topped out at $166 million. On the other end of the spectrum is The Lego Movie, a kid-friendly animated feature. While it certainly wants to do at least the business of The Lego Movie three years ago, which opened to $69 million and finished its run with $257 million, it hopes that the added effort of making this a sole-Batman production that they can hit up the opening weekends closer to The Dark Knight movies, the latter two of which opened to over $150 million before topping $400 million each. That may be a tough task and it will take an opening approaching $100 million to best Fifty Shades Darker if it lives up to expectations, so the competition will be fierce. Ultimately, I think Fifty Shades may miss its predecessor’s mark while Lego Batman handily tops its and wins the weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had no interest in the original and I feel the same about the sequel.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The second chapter in a very dull franchise.
Tripp Burton (TB): This franchise holds no interest for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For fans of the books and original movie only. A friend wanted to see the first one, and could not make it all the way through.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While the original was acclaimd and early word is the sequel is equally good, I just can’t drum up the interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The first one was surprisingly not half bad. Could be a decent sequel.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never saw the first film, but I know this is becoming something of a cult favorite, so it may be interesting to check out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Keanu Reeves is not my favorite actor, so the original had no appeal. This has even less.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Lego Movie was good, but everything about this production just seems hysterical.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I enjoyed the first LEGO movie and poor Batman can certainly use another overhaul. This could be good.
Tripp Burton (TB): The first LEGO film was a surprise smash, both artistically and commercially, and this one seems to be a worthy follow-up.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Lego Movie was enjoyable, so I am assuming that this will be too.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ll admit freely that the concept has me hooked, but I could easily be underwhelmed.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tired horror formula. Ignore it.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a solid genre pic, but I will wait to catch it on streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): nother week, though this one has two horror film releases. This looks like the lesser of the two.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like the less interesting, less exciting bastard child of Rosemary’s Baby and American Horror Story: Hotel.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another tired horror formula. Ignore this one, too.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a generic genre film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not much of a horror movie fan, but Fionula Flanagan might make this one tolerable.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): That it has been pushed back for release so far makes me wonder if it’s really any good, but you can’t have a more compelling pair of actors to sell your film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting off-beat historical drama that the British critics liked. Definitely worth a look.
Tripp Burton (TB): A great cast doesn’t seem to be able to elevate this generic looking picture.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This had sounded like an interesting, fact-based film, but the fact that they held back the release until now does not bode well. It should be a decent, if superficial, movie.
