Looking at the Weekend: Feb. 15-17, 2019

With The Lego Movie 2 underperforming, it makes next weekend ripe for a new number one film. Alita: Battle Angel may have the best chance simply because it has more advertising. That said, Isn’t It Romantic could be a surprise hit giving it the top spot. Happy Death Day 2U is a sequel to a film that wasn’t that big at the box office, so probably won’t do well in its second attempt.

Our Highest Rated Films: Isn’t It Romantic, Birds of Passage, Sorry Angel

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Seeing a live-action anime isn’t something I want to do.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A cyborg romance, doesn’t look bad for what it is.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing about this looks that creative or interesting, but it might not be terrible.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never saw the original, but the trailer for the sequel has me intrigued enough to want to watch both.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Happy Valentine’s Day…not! No thanks.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not see the first one, though the trailer does have enough bits of humor that make me think it might be worth it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m a sucker for a great musical romantic comedy, especially one that attacks the very tropes on which it’s built.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Romantic fluff could be a pleasant time killer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a fun send up of rom coms.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m a bit tired of the attention given to boxing dramas.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The harsh realities of bare knuckle fighting come home to roost in this stark melodrama.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just did not look appealing at all.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks horrendously predictable in a fake wrestling kind of way.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This true-life wrestling comedy-drama actually looks quite good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has an interesting premise, but just does not look terribly good. I’m not sure The Rock should play himself.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer doesn’t give a lot of details, but there’s enough to be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): French gay romance at the height of the Paris AIDS crisis in the mid-1990s might be compelling.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I want to like this film, but the trailer just did not give me enough for that.
