This may end up being a very unusual weekend. There’s little doubt The Lego Batman Movie will have a solid holdover and might hold onto the top spot at the box office, but Fist Fight could be stiff competition. This is the right time of year for comedies like it, which may give it a boost as it competes against two other new releases, A Cure for Wellness, which isn’t likely to be a big box office draw, and The Great Wall, which may sport box office magnet Matt Damon, but it’s a genre that seldom does well at the box office. It could outperform expectations, though, which is why the weekend is so tough to predict.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first trailer for this film sucked me in so much that even the less exciting follow up trailers haven’t diminished my desire to see this film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unusual mystery could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): Gore Verbinski can be a very interesting Hollywood director, and this looks like a return to form for him.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The thriller just seems tepid and the early reviews are not the most kind.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Charlie Day is one of my favorite working comedians and this looks surprisingly fun, though probably won’t be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unappealing looking comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): Nothing about this movie appeals to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks incredibly stupid.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love Zhang Yimou’s Hero, but I’ve been left cold since. The trailers for this film donโ€™t improve my impressions of it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking fantasy film could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve seen this trailer a few times, and I can’t even figure out what it is trying to be.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A decent lead, but it looks like a complete misfire.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t mind thrillers, but the trailer doesn’t do enough to excite me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Compelling looking thriller seems worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): The word from the festivals on this has been positive, and it looks very effective.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an eerie tale of life on a lonely farm with mystical happenings. I am intrigued.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like an antiquated storyline with few humorous bits in the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lame looking comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t appeal to me at all.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a reasonable rom-com, but aside from half of it being in Spanish, it does not look to add anything new to the genre.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from its immigrant message, this look like a fairly underwhelming film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Timely film about undocumented teens deserves to be seen.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very timely but not very interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A drama about teens without visas should be interesting and timely, but it just does not look like this is the best movie to interest us in it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I’ve gotten tired of World War II films, there’s something about the film’s trailer that intrigues me. I’m sure there is plenty of emotional wreckage on display, which is one of the things that keeps me away from the filmic time period.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Oscar-nominated Foreign Language Film from Denmark deserves to be seen.
Tripp Burton (TB): One of this year’s Oscar nominees for foreign film appears to be well worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This Oscar nominee looks tense and intriguing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a nondescript romantic drama and I’ve seen far too many of them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nothing in the trailer convinces me that this domestic drama is worth venturing out to see.
Tripp Burton (TB): A very strong up-and-coming cast makes this seem worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not really certain what this film will be about. Two friends who may want to be more than friends, but the trailer did not do a great job of exciting me.
