Horror hasn’t had much of an easy time at the box office recently and has been largely absent. That changes this weekend with the first new horror film in some time and one that has critics raving. Get Out is in a solid position to best the week’s two other releases, but never underestimate families wanting to see animation, even if it isn’t any good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks like every single other kidnapped girlfriend/wife movie ever made without any semblance of originality.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Great locations, good cast, tired plot. I’ll wait for cable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A strong cast looks wasted on this violent film about drugs and robbery.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): At first, I wasn’t sure whether this would be any good, but the more I hear about it and the more I think about it, it may be the most inventive and cogent work we get all year in this genre.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Guess who’s coming to dinner horror show. Might be half way decent.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not normally into horror films, but with traces of the Stepford Wives in this one, it might be interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The animation is terrible and the story looks cheap. Pass.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Leisurely paced animated feature might entertain the kiddies, but not me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I usually like animated features, but this one looks a little lame.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise isn’t awful, but the trailer sells it poorly.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stalin’s 1930s starvation of Ukraine couldn’t be more timely. Looks worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The true story of Stalin starving the Ukrainians should make for a good film, but this looks too melodramatic for its own good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept seems interesting, but the trailer doesn’t do enough to pique my interests.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gamer movies are not my cup of tea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film about a video game ace being set up on murder charges just looks bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another movie about a comic trying to make it big and failing, but always persevering even against awful odds. Not interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Minor comedy about a sad sack stand-up comic. I’ll pass.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing about this sad sack comedy-musician film makes me want to see it.
