The Coens face off against Regency Zombies in this week’s box office competition. While the Coens haven’t always been the biggest box office draws, their current film is a star-studded comedy that should barely top the re-telling of Pride and Prejudice with zombies. I guess I should probably give more credence to the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation, but it looks so dreadful that even die hard fans of the genre will probably stay away.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks so amazingly bad. I can’t even conjure up the words to describe how awful it looks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): With a no-name cast directed by a no-name director it seems that Nicholas Sparks’ name is now enough to sell a film made from one of his novels.
Tripp Burton (TB): Nicholas Sparks adaptations aren’t my thing, but they seem to be the thing for lots of people so this should be popular.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks dreadful to me. Serious, earnest with puppies, and a major car accident. I will pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not the biggest Coens fan, but this looks quite fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer makes this look like another hit for the Coens but I’m a bit skeptical considering the long delay in releasing the film.
Tripp Burton (TB): A new Coen Brothers film is always cause for celebration, and this looks like it could be their funniest out-and-out comedy in a long time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could either be very good, or it could be a complete misfire, and I’m not sure which it is likelier to be at this point. The February release date worries me, but the trailer does look fun. Let’s hope for the best.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m so incredibly curious that I might check it out sometime, but likely only on home video.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jane Austen and zombies are not a match made in movie heaven.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m over the zombie obsession, and I think audiences might be too.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The concept is entertaining, and the original book title made me laugh. However, it looks like they are trying for much too serious a movie and not tongue in cheek at all.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Unless you’re a cineaste, you probably don’t know who Sergei Eisenstein is or care for that matter. Yet, even though I’m familiar with him and his work, I can’t summon up the interest in watching this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Peter Greenway’s films are always a mixed bag – part exhilarating, part off-putting. This looks to be more of the same.
Tripp Burton (TB): This new Peter Greenaway film looks like it could be a lot of fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Peter Greenaway is not my favorite director, but he seems a little tamer in this go around. Like most of his films, it looks visually sumptuous, but his films often get confusing and lost in their own devices. Will have to wait and see.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It will be interesting to see post-Potter Emma Watson doing some dramatic work, but the film doesn’t look that engaging. The only other thing that might get me into the theater is director Amenabar’s involvement.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Amenabar’s films are always interesting. I’d give this one a shot.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a by-the-numbers genre film, but the cast and crew pedigree could make it worth watching.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The saving grace might be Emma Watson, but this horror film has poor early reviews and a trailer that is not that exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Normally, I don’t go in for these types of romantic comedies, but there’s a chemistry between Rebecca Hall and Jason Sudeikis that could help override that disinterest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky looking romantic comedy could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): A good cast could carry this indie romance, but I’ll wait until it streams for free.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer feels like they are trying too hard to be quirky, but a good cast, although with a severe lack of chemistry between the leads, could salvage this.
