It’s hard to tell what the hit of the weekend will be. The 5th Wave has a built-in audience, but Dirty Grandpa breaks a long span lacking in comedy. I’m going to give the edge to 5th Wave because it tickles the alien invasion concept that has been quite popular in the past.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be interesting, but I’m not convinced yet.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The first film in what will likely be another Young Adult franchise doesn’t excite me.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is an interesting book, but the adaptation looks slightly less interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a knock off of The Hunger Games and Divergent without much to recommend it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Haunted house horror films can be fun, but I’m not sure if this one will be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A different looking horror film, but will it be good?
Tripp Burton (TB): Low budget horror isn’t my thing, but this could be interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A reasonably effective horror trailer, but I still have no desire to see this film.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Silly looking comedy could surprise.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks unbearable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks simply dreadful. Robert De Niro should be making better films than this. Is he that hard up for money?

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have no idea if this is going to be any good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Romania’s submission for the 2015 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film is a historical epic that may prove interesting
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m a big fan of the Romanian New Wave, and this looks like a noble entry.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A strange trailer, but it looks oddly entertaining, and the early reviews are good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is another film that I can’t figure out whether it will be any good or not.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Is there really an audience out there for a film about “two elderly whores who go back to their hovels”?
Tripp Burton (TB): A fascinating story and good festival buzz will put this on my watch list.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Except for showing that the film deals with wrestling dwarfs, it gives no idea of what this film is actually about and it did not pique my interest at all.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not the least bit interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Human trafficking film with a cast of mostly TV actors looks like it should have stuck to TV.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a topic that needs a strong cinematic interpretation to get the word out there, but this doesn’t look to do it justice.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A film about sex trafficking is a worthy effort, but it looks too earnest to really make me want to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s not much that seems interesting here.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Re-edited version of a Keanu Reeves film for which the original director took his name off the film doesn’t look promising.
Tripp Burton (TB): Everything about this feels generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Keanu Reeves playing a cop investigating his late partner’s death might be interesting, but nothing about the trailer excited me either.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Martial arts films aren’t generally my favorite films. There are exceptions, but this isn’t one of them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Missed Ip Man and Ip Man 2, think I’ll miss Ip Man 3 as well.
Tripp Burton (TB): Was there an Ip Man 1 and an Ip Man 2? And why is Mike Tyson in this movie?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Some early reviews are liking this sequel (of films I did not know existed), however a series of random fight scenes in the trailer does nothing to show what the film is about. I will pass.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Confused looking thriller looks like a near-miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): The director and cast have me intrigued about this film, even if it looks painfully generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Good actors, but a film that looks just too bleak and violent to interest me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m very curious how this plays out. It was a box office phenomenon in China (albeit with significant controversy), so it could be quite good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): What was a hit in Taiwan doesn’t necessarily translate into a hit in the U.S. but you never know.
Tripp Burton (TB): I would have no idea this movie existed if it wasn’t for this column, and by the looks of it, by tomorrow I will forget about it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like it is trying for humor, but failing badly. Perhaps this film about monsters and humans interacting will not be so bad, but I am not holding my breath.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m a bit of a sucker for science fiction films, so this looks like it could be a quiet sleeper.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Time travel thriller has possibilities.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m getting tired of sci-fi noir, and this movie looks to remind me why.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film about time travel might prove interesting, but the trailer did it no favors by being so dense.
