It could be another week at the top of the charts for Split as this weekend’s new releases don’t seem like they’ll have a lot of teeth. Fighting it out for the top of the new releases will be A Dog’s Purpose and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter with Gold opening low in the top ten or out of it altogether. I give the edge to the more family-friendly A Dog’s Purpose, though the PETA-fueled controversy over a single incident during the film’s production months ago was brought forward at the last minute to try and torpedo the film. The film’s writer and producer both took the video to task for its delay and attempted to explain the situation, but it may be too late and if the film under performs, it will be thanks in large part to that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film’s writer had very interesting things to say about the video that cropped up recently. I’m not sure I want to see the film still, but I’m less likely to boycott it at this juncture as a result of his rational commentary.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I really liked Lasse Hallstrom’s Hachi, so maybe his reincarnated dog movie will be better than the trailer makes it look, but I have my doubts.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For dog lovers, and even that may be pushing it, as this film may not be even mediocre.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Matthew McConaughey is my Kryptonite and this film doesn’t look like it deserves alternate considerations.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Poorly reviewed limited December release already available for streaming on iTunes looks disappointing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Neither the reviews nor the trailer make this look anything more than mediocre.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not a fan of the franchise, but a diversion is a diversion.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Enough already, the final chapter in this franchise should have been a long time ago.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having not seen any of the earlier films, there is nothing at all that makes me want to see this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept has potential, but the trailer doesn’t give much hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer for this “comedy” about a kidnapping was disgusting enough without having to sit through the entire film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This took a somewhat interesting premise and managed to make it look dreadful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks painfully unfunny.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another dumb looking Jackie Chan movie that I’ll skip.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Maybe a must-see for die hard Jackie Chan fans, but everyone else should give it a miss.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Schlock for the sake of schlock is not necessarily good schlock.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Campy looking Christmas comedy-horror film released in January is a dumb idea, but I admire the chutzpah.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It neither looks like a comedy nor a horror film and everyone should pass on this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be fun, but it could also be a waste of time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Lovable old geezer comedies are a Hollywood staple, so why not one from south of the border?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This movie could be humorous, but it looks like a stale retread of all the father-son comedies that have already been made.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has potential, but the trailer doesn’t do it justice.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Iranian director Farhadi’s latest relationship drama should be worth catching.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I find the trailer off-putting, but I enjoyed the director’s earlier outing, A Separation, so I am hoping the good early reviews show it’s true quality.
