Kung Fu Panda and its first sequel were hits. I see no reason to believe that it won’t happen again. This week’s two other wide releases don’t convince me they can top the Panda. While the spoof genre has had some success with mainstream audiences, as have disaster films, these two films just don’t seem like the broadly-appealing titles that would take down a film whose second part took in $47 million on opening weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like movies like this even if they aren’t great movies. I love puns, so these make me laugh.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This is an unfunny looking comedy.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have little time for these types of parodies.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original film this was based on was not that enjoyable, so a parody is probably not going to help it any. It looks like a dud.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks surprisingly cheap.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast in action drama that could be hit or miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): It seems like we have had a lot of these types of storm-at-sea movies lately, and they are all blurring together in my mind.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Overly earnest and with a trailer that makes it seem likely that they are rescued at the end, it is hard to get too excited over this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is one of my favorite animated franchises, so I’m definitely in.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Heavily hyped animated film should clean up at the box office.
Tripp Burton (TB): I liked the first Kung Fu Panda well enough, although I’ve lost track of the series since then.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This series has been enjoyable thus far. This may be the least funny, but it should still be a hoot to watch.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): They’re Oscar nominees already. What’s not to want to see.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): These Oscar-nominated compilations are always interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love the chance to check these out, and they are often more original than the major nominees!
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I always enjoy seeing these films and am looking forward the 29th when they finally open here in Denver. They can be a mixed bag, often very serious documentaries and a few perplexing choices in animated and live action categories, but they also can be a wondrous example of what can be accomplished in 2-30 minutes.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Other than to see if this long-delayed film is a train wreck or not, there’s not a lot to hold my interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Revisionist westerns are an iffy proposition.
Tripp Burton (TB): Could be an interesting film, with a lot of talent behind it, but the early release date makes me cautious.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A decent cast, but a film filled with old west clichรฉs just does not excite me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks both boorish and bad.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For Bollywood fans.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very uninteresting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A violent Indian boxing film. It does not look promising and the songs over the trailer do not make it any more appealing.
