Each outing of the Underworld series has opened to over $20 million, ranging from just barely over for the 2009 outing to $26 million for the second in 2006. The last film to release at the box office was 5 years ago to the tune of $25 million. Five years is a long time, but it should make close to that this time around. It has little competition. The big question is whether or not Star Wars will repeat. It’s likely it can since the $49 million it took in last weekend was a scant 22% drop from a holiday weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I watched the first Underworld film in the theaters. It was so unenchanted with it that I haven’t seen a single one of the sequels. This will be no exception.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast, but I have no interest in the subject matter.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve never seen any of this franchise, and I’m not gonna start now.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This does not look like a terribly good film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer doesn’t look that original, but with support from critics, it might be something I want to check out later at home.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Crime drama may be rewarding, but looks like a tough sit-through.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a weak thriller.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): One brother goes to prison, one does not and four years later their lives come together again. It looks violent and just not that interesting to me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The themes resonate with me, but the trailer just doesn’t excite me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ken Loach films are always worth a look, but this one looks like another tough sit-through.
Tripp Burton (TB): Any Palme d’Or winner is worth checking out, even if it wasn’t enthusiastically received when it won at Cannes.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a good indictment about the complexities and frustrations of dealing with bureaucracy.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This type of comedy has never appealed to me. The last couple of films of similar styles that I saw left me cold and unamused.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): World War II was no laugh fest, but if you’re a Jackie Chan fan, go for it. I’ll stay home.
Tripp Burton (TB): I like Jackie Chan, but this looks like a misstep.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This Jackie Chan martial arts film will appeal to his fans, but it does not look likely to win over anyone new.
