A trio of new films opens this weekend and, of the two, only one can be said to have a built-in audience already. The Purge: Election Year is the third film in the popular horror franchise, a strangely fitting entry into this year’s film race. It won’t likely top the charts, but it will have the best chance of not underperforming. Both The BFG and The Legend of Tarzan have had soft interest from audiences, so they may not be able to do much in the way of box office. Of course, it’s a three-day weekend, so it’s possible they could both do well. I’m giving the edge to the Steven Spielberg effort.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I respect Spielberg, the trailers for this film just don’t excite me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated family film should be a major box office hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): I just reread the book with my daughter and it made me more excited to see what Spielberg does with the material.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are some interesting things in the trailer, but not nearly as much as I would like.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The third most filmed character of all time after Sherlock Holmes and Dracula, should do reasonably well once again.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pointless and painful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is a fascinating, if bloody horror series. I enjoyed the first two film, so this one is a sure thing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The second sequel to a film I either never heard of or completely forgot about is nothing I’m interested in seeing.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t seen the others, but this looks like it could be interesting for some late-night TV.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be a most interesting moral tale.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Just when you thought you couldn’t be shocked by World War II stories along comes this absolute stunner.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks interesting, and a different take on World War II films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An adaptation of one of the masters of spy literature could be decent.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unusual thriller looks intriguing.
Tripp Burton (TB): The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun, even if I’m a little fatigued with John LeCarre adaptations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks painfully corny.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not exactly my cup of tea but the first-time film director has an interesting TV background so it could be worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): Nothing here interests me.
