Two movies battle it out for superiority this weekend. One features a vampire looking for love while the other features a Rock looking for his loved ones. While the Hotel Transylvania films have been popular, popular enough to merit a third outing, I suspect that Dwayne Johnson’s box office muscles paired with a Die Hard-meets-Towering Inferno premise should help propel it to the top of the box office.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t seen either of the first two films, largely because of Adam Sandler. However, they’ve always looked mildly diverting, so if I ever have nothing else to do, I might watch the first two and then the third.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylish looking third entry in the franchise should please fans, maybe not much the rest of us.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have somehow avoided the first two films, but the kids liked them so I may be seeing this this weekend.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has been an okay series, but I am just not that excited about another film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like Die Hard and Towering Inferno, this seeming cross between them doesn’t look nearly that appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine looking action-adventure set in a burning skyscraper looks derivative.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a fun film, but I have a soft spot for disaster films.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Dwayne Johnson can be a decent actor, but far too often he does these over the top action films that play mainly to teenage boys. This looks to be one of those, but a little more mawkish than usual.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Something about this film irks me and I can’t quite put my finger on it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early word is that Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill are very good in this comedic biopic.
Tripp Burton (TB): I had somehow missed knowing this existed, but a new Gus Van Sant film is always worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics seem to like the film, but the trailer left me unexcited about the characters or the movie in general.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer was somewhat interesting and somewhat not, which makes it difficult to decide whether I want to see it or not. I’m leaning towards yes.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer about an 8th grader who says “for sure” and “whatever” a lot was a big turn-off for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard fabulous things about this and am really excited to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There have been several coming of age films lately and unfortunately this does not look like it adds much to the genre.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes this look so dull and lifeless and for a biopic about a painter, that shouldn’t be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Even Tahiti manages to look dull in the trailer for this French biopic.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks completely uninteresting to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be an interesting biopic but it certainly does not appear to be one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I enjoy a newspaper political thriller, this one looks a bit dull.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Newspaper drama about the invasion of Iraq looks like another misfire from Rob Reiner.
Tripp Burton (TB): Rob Reiner’s career has become completely uninteresting and this joins those ranks.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The lead up to the Iraq war is ripe for a good version. This one looks to be earnest but sort of dull.
