With Matt Damon back at the helm, the fifth film in the Jason Bourne franchise will likely see a sizable jump in its opening weekend numbers. The first film in the series was the worst with a $27.1 million opening. The second film had a sizable bump to $52.5 million while the third film had another nice jump to $69.3 million. The fourth film, starring Jeremy Renner opened to a lower-than-hoped $38.1 million. Should Jason Bourne jump back to its prior high water marks, it will still win the weekend. Even performing to the 2012 film’s numbers would likely take the weekend. There is simply no other competition capable of stopping it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer isn’t the funniest, but it looks amusing enough to catch at a lower price showing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Revolting garbage whose trailer has been stinking up the TV airwaves for far too long, hopefully soon to be gone.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks painfully unfunny to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): That this comes from the writers if The Hangover is not really a thrill for me. It looks lame.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The franchise has been solid and it’s nice to see Matt Damonb back in action, but the trailer wasn’t that great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Matt Damon’s last outing in the role he’s played four times now since 2002 should be a crowd-pleaser.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t kept up with the Bourne franchise, but I’ve always liked the films and this looks like a solid new entry.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A decent cast and director will hopefully prove more interesting than the trailer did. I’ve enjoyed the rest of the series, so I am hopeful, though they play up the violence too much in the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested entirely from a “that’s such a cool concept” perspective, not that the film promise to be of high quality.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dumb looking thriller aimed at teenagers with nothing better to spend their time on.
Tripp Burton (TB): A great premise for a thriller film, but I’m not sure if the execution looks up to snuff to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): People getting pulled into the reality of the games they are playing has been done before. The engaging cast may make it work, but I will still probably give it a pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Anna Gunn well enough, but this looks like a warmed over mess.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Minor thriller looks like a decent enough time killer.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m glad Anna Gunn is getting some post-Breaking Bad work, and a leading role to boot, but this doesn’t look up to any of her talents.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It tries to be the distaff side of Wolf of Wall Street, but the trailer just does not command one to see the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is one of those situations where an actor (in this case Logan Lerman) makes up the largest portion of why I’m interested in it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong star-making turn by Logan Lerman in 1950s coming-of-age drama could have traction.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not sure if I need another telling of this type of story, but with the talents involved and the positive advance word, I’ll certainly check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a sleeper hit adaptation of a Philip Roth novel. It sparks some interest.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): In spite of the cast, the trailer does not make this look that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Decent looking post-apocalyptic thriller, but it’s already available for downloading on Amazon so it’s probably ineligible for Oscar consideration.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m really looking forward to this, which looks like a new and different take on the recent wave of apocalyptic movies.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer really doesn’t excite, but some of the early reviews make this sound like it could be worthwhile.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This seems rather formulaic and uninteresting, which is a bit disappointing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Coming-of-age drama set on the mean streets of Cleveland looks like a winner.
Tripp Burton (TB): I was hoping this would be a throw-back to the great Disney documentaries of the 1950s. Instead, it looks like another dull indie flick.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A couple of critics like it, but my takeaway from the trailer is that it is just another coming of age story dealing with drugs, rap and bad life choices.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m over this type of horror film, it does little to excite me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Horror film about a parasitic disease that turns victims cannibalistic is not something I’m eager to spend time on.
Tripp Burton (TB): Ariel Schulman has two films coming out this weekend, and this looks even more unimpressive than the other one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another type of zombie apocalypse, and it definitely feels like a movie I will not be seeing.
