The competition will be fierce this week with two major contenders for the box office crown. Tom Cruise has proven time and again that he has the ability to bring people to the theater. While he’s had some duds recently, the Mission: Impossible franchise has been nothing if not steady. Ghost Protocol revitalized a flagging franchise, so it’s likely residual good will can make this a top opener.

Hot on its heels, however, is Vacation, the sequel/reboot of the National Lampoon’s Vacation franchise. It’s been 18 years since the Griswolds last ventured onto the big screen with the dud Vegas Vacation. Revisiting its roots, the simply titled Vacation takes the young son of Clark Griswold in the first film, Rusty, and makes him the new patriarch as he and his family make the hijinks-filled trip to Wally World. Counting on nostalgia for the original film, the studio hopes to re-launch the franchise for a new generation. It seems well poised to be the latest July/August R-Rated comedy to score box office gold, but I doubt it will be enough to take over first place.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley: This franchise has been one of the more dependable ones with three of the four films being incredibly entertaining. The trailer doesn’t look very enticing this time around, but I’m still interested.
Peter: The latest Mission Impossible entry looks like it could be the best since the first almost twenty years ago.
Tripp: I’m not big on the Mission: Impossible franchise (I’ve missed the last couple ones, though), but if this is your thing, it could be great.
Thomas: The early word of mouth on this is quite strong, and I am looking forward to seeing it. It sounds like the franchise is still quite strong after 19 years.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley: I’m very leery about this film’s prospects. The original film was one of the funniest films of the 1980’s, but its sequels were irregular and disappointing. The trailer doesn’t give me a lot of hope, but perhaps enough to make it through.
Peter: Not my cup of tea but should bring out the none-too-picky crowds.
Tripp: Man, this looks like one horrible remake!
Thomas: This sounds like a truly awful remake of a movie that I didn’t really enjoy to start with.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley: Jason Segal is one of the least interesting actors/comedians working today. Jesse Eisenberg can be fascinating, but is frequently shrill and annoying. The pairing doesn’t fill me with hope.
Peter: Interesting looking intellectual talkfest, could be something special.
Tripp: I have no interest in watching Jason Segal go for an Oscar, but lots of people seem to. This look painful to me.
Thomas: This sounds like an intriguing film, and I hope it lives up to its hype.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley: It looks like another Katherine Heigel waste of time, I don’t care if it does take a positive view of gay marriage.
Peter: Lesbian wedding comedy might have had an edge 10-20 years ago, but looks dated now.
Tripp: I tend to avoid Katherine Heigl vehicles like the plague, but the word of mouth is actually OK on this one.
Thomas: They could have made an interesting movie with this premise, but I gather it wastes a good cast in a mediocre movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley: Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a very fascinating director, even when he’s not on his game. The trailer suggests it could have some good elements, but being unreleased for two years doesn’t give me a good feeling.
Peter: Kid’s film could be a surprise hit, but is more likely to get lost in the shuffle.
Tripp: I can’t stand Jean-Pierre Jeunet films, but if you do, good for you!
Thomas: There may be good points to this film, but it also sounds a little too precious for its own good.
