After a week off of major debuts, Ant-Man and the Wasp gives Disney/Marvel another opportunity to assault the box office. This time, it’s a follow-up to the 2015 film that introduced us to the madcap adventures of a cat burglar who stumbles upon a size altering suit. While the original was not nearly as successful as some of the more recent Marvel outings, it was solid enough to deserve a sequel. This time, Evangeline Lilly is given more screentime as the Ant-Man associate Wasp, one of the original members of the Avengers. As one of only two movies to fill in the gaps between the two parts of the Avengers films, it may get a boost at the box office, enabling it to soar higher than its predecessor. Also, if early indications are true and the film really is a success with critics, it could be a much bigger success than suspected. The First Purge has no hopes of topping that film, but it could rival the third weekend of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for second place considering the $30 million-range debuts of all three prior films in the series.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Ant-Man was one of the better origin films of the Disney/Marvel universe, that makes its sequel a more anticipated one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The first one was a pleasant surprise. This one should be just as good.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never got around to the original Ant-Man+ movie, but this looks like a lot of fun.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first Ant-Man movie was fun, but the trailer for this one makes it seem like it will be a step down.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This is one of my favorite horror film series, so a prequel still seems like a easy sale.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a rather heavy-handed critique of the current political situation.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never got around to the other Purge movies, and this looks a little too close to home these days.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have no interest in this series whatsoever.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although it doesn’t look like much, it has potential.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Wan rom-com tied to Bitcoin blockchain distribution looks like something for a very limited audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks too saccharine for my tastes.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Frenetic farce could be just what the doctor ordered…or not.
Tripp Burton (TB): This has gotten great word of mouth.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like it could be wildly entertaining. It definitely has a fun and inspired trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer might just be enough to interest me in watching the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like an extended version of a People’s Court case involving a dispute over a tree.
Tripp Burton (TB): This festival favorite should be worth checking out for sure.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a sleeper of a dark comedy.
