There are three new films opening this weekend and none of them have the greatest of prospects, meaning Solo will be winning a second weekend. Of the three, two seem like they would each have solid chances of being the top new release. Action Point has connections to Jackass and Upgrade has connections to Saw and Insidious. Ultimately, I suspect that the slightly wider release of Action Point will be the determining factor, but a surprising shift in interest towards Upgrade could push it over the top.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have little desire to see what the Jackass folks are up to this time (or any time, really).
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another movie made by and for jackasses. I’ll pass.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m growing tired of the Johnny Knoxville thing, and this looks like a retread of what came before.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Probably a movie to skip unless you are a great fan of Johnny Knoxville. The sequences look incredibly stupid.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Appealing stars don’t counteract a predictable premise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It’s difficult to judge the film’s quality from the trailer but it looks tense and exciting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like something we’ve seen many times before.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The two stars have plenty of appeal, which is good as most of the movie only has the two of them in it. It is a type of movie that has been done many times, though having a woman in charge of the drifting boat is a new touch.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As corny as this looks, it also looks modestly intriguing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ultra-violent variation on Robocop doesn’t look particularly appealing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland retread of something we’ve seen many times before.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An artificial upgrade in a paralyzed human has been done many times before, this one looks more violent than usual.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The story, based on a real one, has some appeal, but perhaps not enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): There may be a good movie buried in this crime film but the trailer doesn’t sell it for me.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love a heist movie, and this looks like a very fun one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Heist movies should be fun, but this one feels a little off.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a cheap, unappealing production that struggles to feel authentic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like an interesting premise poorly executed in an underwhelming drama with nowhere to go.
Tripp Burton (TB): I heard good things about this out of Sundance and I’m looking forward to catching it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There may be an interesting story in there, but it looks to be buried under a lot of schmaltz.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): You can’t throw a stone in Hollywood without hitting one of these down-on-her-luck indie features and this one doesn’t look much better than those.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another unappealing comedy with unappealing characters.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like nothing new.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing about the trailer made this sound better than middle of the road.
