The only sequel releasing recently that has the potential to perform close to its predecessor. That doesn’t mean that Now You See Me 2, the sequel to an unlikely hit, won’t give it a run for its money. Meanwhile, the latest video game adaptation looks to be headed towards defeat, at least in the United States. Overseas it’s doing fairly well.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I refuse to support a film that’s based on the archives of a pair of paranormal shysters.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sequel to a fairly decent modern horror film should be worth catching.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t seen the first film, but this looks like more of the same.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Itโ€™s an effective trailer, but having not seen the original and not really being into horror films, I will pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I want to see this based solely on my enjoyment of the first film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Now you don’t. The original was too gimmicky for me, no reason to think the sequel will be any less so.
Tripp Burton (TB): I haven’t seen the first film, but this looks like more of the same.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having not seen the first movie, watching the frenetic razz-ma-tazz of the sequel does not excite me much. It might be fun, but is low on my list to see.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As a longtime World of Warcraft player, this movie intrigues me. I also love Duncan Jones as a filmmaker. Early reviews be damned.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well received fantasy film looks to be a real crowd pleaser.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no attachment to the computer game, but this looks like a lot of talented artists collecting big paychecks.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like it has decent CGI work, but the story looks rather incomprehensible and weak.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a paint-by-numbers thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Formulaic looking thriller could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it could fall apart very quickly, but might be worth streaming in a couple of months.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An impressive cast goes from psychological thriller to low rent action picture awfully fast. How did they get these people to do this?

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): How awful does a film have to look before you give it a zero rating. Try watching this trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dumb looking thriller could surprise, but I doubt it.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadfully pedestrian.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like standard issue young man fantasy of the hot older woman coming on to him, and nothing about it seemed to rise above the standard.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m modestly intrigued by this French foreign language film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): If Renoir in ’46 and Bunuel in ’64 couldn’t make a masterpiece of this old warhorse no one can.
Tripp Burton (TB): Other greater filmmakers have already told this story, but this could still be worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This period drama looks both lush and unmoving, not a happy combination.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If the trailer didn’t look so bad, I’d be into this just for the cast.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jude Law’s hideous Southern accent and over-the-top ranting as Thomas Wolfe exhausted me in the trailer.
Tripp Burton (TB): Michael Grandage’s debut as a film director looks intriguing, but I’m a sucker for the period and the characters.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A biography of the writer Tom Wolfe looks interesting, though early reviews tend towards not kind.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is a bit too sappy-inspirational, but I suspect it’s better than the trailer suggests.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Award-winning Australian film appears to have limited international appeal.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland and uninteresting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer was not that exciting, though the vistas of the outback are beautiful, but the early reviews are very complimentary, so this sounds like the picture of the week.
