It cannot be underestimated. Although Cars is the weakest series in the Pixar universe, the box office hasn’t seen a lot of animated films recently, so its ripe for a conquering. Cars 3 will do incredibly well and will likely knock Wonder Woman off its throne. That is, of course, unless the film doesn’t live up to the original and is constantly compared to the much-maligned sequel. Then things could get dicey. Rough Night will likely do well and 47 Meters Down could be a spoiler.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like yet another in a long line of shark movies that don’t look very interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Advance word is good, so go if watching two girls in a cage surrounded by sharks is your thing.
Tripp Burton (TB): I feel like this movie has already been made several times before, and I never saw any of those either.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be a gripping thriller, but pretty girls trapped by sharks has been done before and I’m just not that interested.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer almost has me interested, but it does feel like an overly generic biopic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A bio of Tupac Shakur could be worth seeking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): That guy looks just like Tupac, but the movie doesn’t look to do Tupac justice.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Unless this ends up shining like Straight Outta Compton, it looks like just another film about a rise to success from obscurity, but with way more violence and foul language than usual. I confess that I know little about Tupac, but I am not sure how enlightening this will be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although I was pleasantly surprised by the original and unfortunately disappointed in its sequel, the third looks more like the first, which gives me more hope that it will be better.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I didn’t like the first one, couldn’t take the second one, have no desire to see the third.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve miraculously avoided the Cars phenomenon in my house, and I hope that remains.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It definitely sounds like an improvement over the previous sequel, but it still will not be as good as some of the other Pixar films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While the trailers have started to grate, the film looks like a good deal of fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): No thanks, the trailer was sickening enough.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks painfully unfunny to me, but I’m sure it will have its lovers.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks bad, really bad. And I see no reason to see the full movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As unusual as the premise is, it feels wholly familiar, which lessens some of its appeal.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Excellent cast in a gripping story, I’m looking forward to this one.
Tripp Burton (TB): I didn’t love Trevorrow’s small-scale debut Safety Not Guaranteed, but this still looks like an interesting post-Jurassic World, pre-Star Wars choice for him and I’ll check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Protecting a girl who is being abused is a noble thing, but it looks like this movie loses its way in going there.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Fascinating from a performance perspective, the film looks ver dialogue heavy, which could suit these personalities just fine.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Under-the-radar historical drama set in Northern Ireland looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): A cast like this has to make this worth watching.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An impeccable cast should produce fireworks, but it sounds like a predictable movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A slapstick comedy that isn’t too often seen these days. It could be fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Emmanuelle Riva’s last film looks like it could be a real charmer.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks painful in any language.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The slapstick of the trailer does not excite me, but some early reviews suggest it might be a fun throwback to the films of Chaplin and Tati. I’m not sure, but am willing to give it a chance.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Outside of Sally Hawkins’ performance, the film doesn’t look that enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Festival hit about a real-life semi-handicapped artist provides another indication that the films in limited release this week are stronger than those in wide release.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland and bizarre at the same time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Two strong leads and an interesting story could make this a worthwhile film. The reviews especially for Sally Hawkins are quite good.
