Opening to the tune of $208 million three years ago, Jurassic World proved there is plenty of life left in the Jurassic Park franchise. While the $231 million it would have made in 2018 dollars is a staggering figure, it’s not an insurmountable one. While the film is unlikely to top its predecessor, which couldn’t even top the original in inflation-adjusted currency, the second film will do well and will definitely top the second film in the series, which made $457 million adjusted for inflation. That said, I suspect the opening weekend, with the competition of Incredibles 2 is probably going to top out around $200 million even if it opens in more theaters than the prior film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The prior film felt more like a retread of the original than a new incarnation, its wonder of discovering dinosaurs for the first time replaced by the wonder of seeing a massiave over-commercialized theme park built around it. The sequel, while it looked different on initial reveal, has begun to look more and more like a derivative of the second film in the series, which doesn’t give me much hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This may be just one sequel too many for the tired franchise.
Tripp Burton (TB): I was in the minority of enjoying Jurassic World, so I’m excited for this one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I will see this, but the idea of sending people to an island with a violently erupting volcano sounds silly.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Good actors do not rescue a bad premise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast in overly familiar family comedy may not be enough.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love those actors, but this looks like something I’ll forget existed and stumble across on TV in five years.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This family road trip picture has a few twists and a good cast, but does not sound that exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a decidedly awful western.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky western comedy should find an appreciative audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting, and the Zellners are filmmakers I’ve been keeping my eyes on for a while, so I’m excited to check this out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like they were trying for a comic western, but I am not sure they have succeeded. Kudos at least to Robert Pattinson for trying something different.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If you can figure out what this is actually about from the trailer, you might have some interest in the film. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s no-name cast horror film looks no better than most.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ll skip this one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Yet another horror flick, and this one does not look that good. I will look for something else to see.
