There’s no competition for Transformers: The Last Knight. Wonder Woman should have a decent fourth weekend, but not enough to take it into the top spot. Cars 3 had a relatively soft opening, which means its second weekend drop, even if small, is going to drop it below Wonder Woman. So, even if Transformers gets bad reviews, which it will, the $100 million opening of the prior film, in spite of bad reviews, won’t dissuade moviegoers to check it out.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I tuned out after the second or third film and have no desire to return to this universe since.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This is the sixth film in the franchise of which I’ve happily seen none of the previous films and find nothing in the multiple trailers to make me want to see this one.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have proudly never seen a Transformers film, and I won’t be starting here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Transformers series has been loud and somewhat incomprehensible, and I expect this one to be much the same.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is confusing, which doesn’t make it interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A dystopian love story set in a community of cannibals does nothing for me, although I did like the director’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like great fun and the early reviews back that up.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This dystopian fantasy has some visual interest, but not enough to want to make me see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s a dark comedy and there might be something cheesily fun here, but the trailer doesn’t give enough suggestion that it will be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Extremely unappealing title, poster and trailer should send this one straight to the garbage heap.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a clever new horror film, but I’m getting a little worn out from clever looking horror films.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It seems to be trying for a comedy vibe, but it mostly looks distasteful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): One of the finest women working in Hollywood, Sofia Coppola has received plenty of acclaim for her work on The Beguiled, including the Best Director prize at Cannes, so it’s a definite on my list.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Atmospheric remake of the 1971 film could be an improvement, but the source material is still somewhat off-putting.
Tripp Burton (TB): Sofia Coppola is one of my favorite American filmmakers, and I can’t wait for her journey into the Western genre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is atmospheric and bubbling over with sexual tensions, but early word of mouth is not raves and it looks overdone. Director Coppola’s win at Cannes does not look to repeat at the Oscars.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Some are very excited to see this film, but the trailer isn’t great and I cannot see myself enjoying it much.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Cross-cultural comedy with interesting cast could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard great things about this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are good, but this rom-com that morphs into a deeper drama does not have a trailer that excites or interests me much.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Cheap, crass, and corny, aspects of films that are typically bad and where surprises are few and far between.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Time lapse stoner comedy looks good for a few laughs, but seems a bit one-note to be really good.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks painfully bad.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This lame comedy might attract the stoner crowd, but everyone else should stay far away.
