Tom Cruise’s new film has been earning strong early notices, which should be enough to overcome the likely disappointment in Maleficent and propel it to a first place victory this weekend.

Individual Commentaries

Wesley Lovell: The repetitive and annoying trailers for Edge of Tomorrow may not be accurate, but they are enough to make me not want to watch it or much of anything else coming this weekend.
Peter J. Patrick: What can you say about a week in which the biggest prospective hit is a film about dying teenagers? Can it put a dent in the box office fortunes of its competitive blockbusters, and if so, will it portend a new cycle of such films?
Tripp Burton: Some interesting fare is continuing to trickle out, but as far as Summer Blockbusters go, this is not looking like the most interesting of summers.
Thomas LaTourrette: Surprisingly, the new Tom Cruise movie, Edge of Tomorrow, has good buzz. It may be the first film of his I see in a theater in a long time. None of the others excite me much. The Fault in Our Stars might be good or perhaps too rote and weepy for me.
