I want so much to say that Prometheus will be the weekend’s top film, but if the past is any indication, it isn’t going to open too strong, though the blossoming fan community may bolster the numbers more than I expect, but not enough to beat the likely staggering opening of Madagascar 3. Its predecessor four years ago brought in $63 million its opening weekend and the original took in $47 million. Both of those numbers are higher or close to the numbers I expect from Prometheus. It will be an interesting dichotomy at the box office this weekend.
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted: Fans of the original will flock to the third film in the franchise, but will anyone else care?
Prometheus: If you’re a fan of the Alien franchise, the return of Ridley Scott 33 years later could prove a potent combination.
Bel Ami: Can Robert Pattinson stand up to the level of quality his co-stars exude?
Safety Not Guaranteed: It could be a good, old-fashioned sci-fi film without all the special effects.

ThoughtsI’m not sure this franchise needed a third film and I never caught the second one, but my friends seem interested in catching it, so maybe at the discount house or on a weekend we don’t have something more interesting to watch. |
ThoughtsThere must be an audience for these sequels every 3 or 4 years as they keep making them, but I’m not that audience. |
ThoughtsNeither Oscar nor I have paid attention to the first two films, and it will probably stay that way. |

ThoughtsUntil the Feed the Queue feature put Alien front-and-center in my viewing schedule, I had never seen a single film in the franchise. After Alien and Aliens, I was sold on what could be done with the new prequel even if the most recent two films were disappointing by comparison. |
ThoughtsIt’s a sci-fi horror film from the director of the original Alien. Will it be as good? |
ThoughtsRidley Scott returns to the world of Alien, and it could pick up some of the same tech nods that the original picked up. |

ThoughtsIn spite of all the talented women in the film, this just doesn’t look too impressive. |
ThoughtsA Guy de Maupassant story previously filmed with George Sanders in Robert Pattinson’s role, could be interesting. |
ThoughtsLooks interesting, but needs a lot of attention for Oscar to notice. |

ThoughtsI was first impressed with this film by its rather nifty poster, featuring nothing more than a want ad. But, the trailer further solidified my interest in the film and so as soon as I can find it available anywhere, I’ll gladly sit down to watch. |
ThoughtsLooks like a low rent comedy. |
ThoughtsI am really looking forward to this, but Oscar probably won’t realize it was released. |
