It will be an interesting fight between the second weekend of Wonder Woman and the first weekend of The Mummy. The ad blitz Mummy has been getting should put it on top, but considering they waited until tonight to start holding screenings of the film, perhaps the critics will eviscerate it and destroy its chances at number one. I give it the edge, but Wonder Woman could be on top again.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like it wants to be a new breed of horror film, but the trailers aren’t doing much to emphasize that. It looks mostly likely so many prior horror flicks that it doesn’t sound nearly as interesting as it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another dumb looking horror movie.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard very good things about this and am curious to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Early reviews are good about this psychological thriller, but a tepid trailer gave no indication about why they should be so paranoid.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I love stories about the lengths humans go to in order to save their furry companions, the military angle gives me pause. While it might be uplifting, I’m just not that taken with the concept.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inspirational film about a marine and her dog might be worth seeing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is far from my sort of thing, and I am one of the few who wasn’t impressed with Blackfish, so I will be skipping this one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It will tug at the heart strings and be formulaic, but it probably will be uplifting at the end.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from the fact that it bears little resemblance to the classic Universal horror films that the film is supposed to revive into a franchise, the trailer looks entirely superficial. Worse, the trailer is at distinct odds with the words of the cast and the director about how terrifying the film is and how it is meant to be an homage to those great films. It looks absolutely nothing like that, so how can it be much of an homage?
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This will no doubt fill Universal’s coffers, but they won’t be getting my money.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful and does not get me excited for the horror monster reboot franchise.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An unbelievable but enjoyable trailer makes this look like a decent though much more serious remake of The Mummy.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from the politically charged content in the trailer, the film doesn’t look more than adequately interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Salma Hayek vs. Trump era windbags could be a sleeper hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): The word out of Sundance was very mixed, so I’m curious to see how this turns out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are mostly good, but the talky trailer sure left me cold.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Sam Elliott has a magnetic personality, as does co-star Laura Prepon, but the film looks like a warmed over character study.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sam Elliott seems to be playing himself here, which is not a bad thing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a terrific vehicle for the always underrated Sam Elliott.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I doubt that it will cover any new ground, but it should give Sam Elliott a great acting showcase.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks devilishly entertaining in places and sophomorically bland in others.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): DuMaurier’s novel and the 1952 film version were maddeningly ambiguous, but like that one, the production design, costumes, and lead players should make it worth seeing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a welcome remake that holds a lot of potential.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an interesting period piece, more lurid than most.
