Black Panther will win the weekend again, even if it drops more than 50%. That’s because neither Death Wish or Red Sparrow look much like films that could topple such a potent box office performer or even pull in more than $30 million for the weekend. Of the two, I expect Death Wish will do just a bit better than the poorly-reviewed Red Sparrow simply because old, grizzled actors have done well opening films in these early months.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I was never really interested in the original film or its sequels and just from the looks of the trailer, I won’t be particularly interested in this one either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unnecessary remake of a reviled pro-gun piece of garbage being released on the heels of the Florida school shooting is just plain despicable.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland and completely unnecessary remake.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I had no desire to see this when Charles Bronson did it back in the 70s, and this remake with Bruce Willis does not look to add anything new to the revenging vigilante film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had a passing interest in this film, but the reviews haven’t enticed me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast might be able to lift what appears to be an average thriller, but the trailer doesn’t make me want to rush out and see it.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting change of pace for Jennifer Lawrence and I’m curious to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Watching Jennifer Lawrence play the Russian secret agent might be fun for some. but a mediocre trailer did not do a good job of selling this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks a bit quirky, which could make it intersting, but I’m not terribly sure it will be in my wheelhouse.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Israeli submission for Best Foreign Language film at this year’s Oscars was lobbied against by Israeli government as being anti-Israeli military. Hmm.
Tripp Burton (TB): This was on my radar after being shortlisted for the Foreign Film Oscar, and I’m excited to finally see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’ve heard good things about this film, but the strange trailer almost feels like it is or a different movie than one about a family dealing with the loss of their son. It’s a very odd trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This kind of film has been made countless times, so it doesn’t have quite the luster it might have otherwise had.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a painless albeit minor film from the always interesting Isabelle Huppert that might be worth seeing for her performance.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a surprisingly bland vehicle for Isabelle Huppert.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Isabelle Huppert is always worth watching, but I think this film will not be as good as her.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are elements that look interesting, but there are others that make it look quite sexist.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Under-the-radar film about sexual harassment is timely if nothing else. Worth catching at some point.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a great ensemble, but the movie looks a little generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Decent cast, but it feels like a film that has been done many times before, and little about the trailer was that appealing.
