Is there any chance that Batman v. Superman won’t have a stellar opening? None whatsoever. While it might be able to achieve Deadpool tallies over its run, it would be shocking if it didn’t top $100 million for the weekend. Meanwhile, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 hopes to replicate the slow-build success of its predecessor, even though doing so would be highly unlikely. The film has become little more than a punchline and releasing so long after the original is a major hindrance.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve seen all the major comic book adaptations and this will be no exception.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This should be a big box-office hit whether or not it is any good, but I’ll wait for the reviews before I brave the crowds to see it.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have little time for the Zack Snyder Superhero genre, especially after Man of Steel, but the casting here in particular has me slightly interested
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could prove more interesting than the overblown first film, but I am not certain if it will be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A sequel that no one wanted to a mildly entertaining, but forgettable movie just doesn’t seem that important.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I didn’t care for the original so I’m in no hurry to see this, but I’m willing to give it a shot on home video.
Tripp Burton (TB): The first film was good enough fun, but I’m not sure if we really needed a sequel, especially this far out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It feels like too many years since the original to be that enthralled with a sequel. The first was cute, this just looks derivative.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): GKids doesn’t typically pick up wasted opportunities, so this should be an engaging film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): French animated feature looks charming.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a fun, if slight, looking film. I’ll probably wait until I can watch it streaming at home.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks inventive and may tell a fairly interesting story, so it should be worth seeing. And never underestimate a GKids release for an Oscar nomination.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Chet Baker biography looks promising.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a fascinating biopic, and hopefully the pieces fall into place the right way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Ethan Hawke is getting some of the best reviews of his career for his take on Chet Baker. Unfortunately it sounds like he is better than the rest of the picture, but it should still be worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks both interesting and maddeningly dull.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hank Williams biography received largely negative reviews at last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like the blander of the musical biopics this week.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Tom Hiddleston is getting great notices, but the movie is definitely not. It sounds like a less well made film than Born to Be Blue, so see that one if you want a musical biopic.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nanni Moretti’s Italian films are always interesting. This one should be no exception.
Tripp Burton (TB): Nanni Moretti is a crucial filmmaker, and this looks like one of his more interesting films in years
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are strong, but the trailer gives me no idea of what the film is about. If it is as good as the reviews imply, it will be worth seeing

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Beauty pageants are not my thing.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my cup of tea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): In some ways the trailer looks like an Indian-American version of Legally Blonde done as a girl seeks to find her inner beauty queen, but I don’t think it will have the laughs to sustain it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A great cast does not a great film make.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): French film set in California’s Death Valley at least gives us something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): With this cast, you have to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be impressive to see these two stars of the French cinema onscreen together, but the trailer certainly does not know what it wants to be and robs the film of their cachet.
