Melissa McCarthy shows up at the box office in the wake of the third weekend of Avengers: Infinity War. While Warner Bros. might have thought it was valid counter-programming, the latest McCarthy effort doesn’t look like it will hold its own very well against Avengers and will further decrease her ability to be sold as a box office draw. Avengers will easily top the box office and Life of the Party will at least top this past weekend’s top new comedy release Overboard, though by how much isn’t certain.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Part of me wants to see the film, but another part of me suspects that it won’t be that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine thriller could be a decent time-filler.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland thriller.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): For a home bound thriller, it looks pretty good, though the mother in question seems to take out a lot of bad guys in the trailer alone.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Melissa McCarthy has been quite funny before and the film doesn’t look awful, though it does look pretty predictable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): There’s no life I recognize in this party.
Tripp Burton (TB): My patience is waning on Melissa McCarthy’s schtick, and this looks like more of the same.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Melissa McCarthy is a great comic actress, but once again it feels like she is acting in a film that does not deserve her talents. It might be fun, but it could end up being painful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer did not boost interest in this film for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky comedy could be fun.
Tripp Burton (TB): A great cast still looks like it can’t carry this film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An interesting premise of a man marrying his brother’s ex-girlfriend looks like it devolves into the usual family wedding issues.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer’s mysterious elements made it interesting, but not enough to take time out to catch it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Suspense-filled festival hit could be interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): Some good word-of-mouth has me slightly interested in this film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A young woman falls for a man who may be dangerous, but provides an escape from her stifling family. It could be good, and is said to boast a great breakthrough performance by Jessie Buckley.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks awful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Effects-laden sci-fi film doesn’t look like anything special.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a bland sci-fi film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure what they are going for with this movie, and the trailer really does not help.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ve heard that it’s supposed to be quite a feminist saga, but the trailer makes it look ridiculously anti-feminist.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The title says it all, not my usual cup of tea but doesn’t look half bad.
Tripp Burton (TB): The buzz for this is that it is an excellent action film, and I’m intrigued to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This look like a very bloody rape revenge fantasy, and nothing about the trailer makes me want to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for Saoirse Ronan, I’m not sure I’d be that interested in this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Oft-filmed Chekhov classic with a superlative cast is once again worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): This cast and crew doing Chekhov makes this a must-see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer did not excite me that much, but some of the early reviews are strong and almost all name Annette Bening as the stand out of the cast.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are portions of the trailer that look interesting, but it also looks quite unoriginal.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low-key social drama could be a good movie for a rainy afternoon.
Tripp Burton (TB): This could be interesting, but it also looks like a very generic indie.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A young man may be trying to get his life back together after prison, but does not look to be trying very hard. The characters do not look that appealing and I am unsure that I want to spend time with them.
