Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War will certainly remain atop the box office charts. The contest for the week’s second-place finisher will be between supernatural horror film The Darkness and the star-studded thriller Money Monster. While horror hasn’t had a good time lately, this film could break the trend. However, with Julia Roberts and George Clooney toplining Money Monster, I have to give it the edge.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Yet another supernatural horror film that looks partly original, but is built on predictable story elements.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another horror movie. I’ll pass.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like another dreary, uninspired horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I found it a somewhat confusing trailer, but since I am not that much of a fan of horror films, I will be passing on it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The only concern I have is that the film has yet to be screened for critics. That’s not a good sign. That doesn’t mean I’m not excited to see Jodie Foster’s latest directorial effort.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jodie Foster’s hostage drama with an A-list cast looks like it might actually be good.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting and exciting, although with this cast and crew I hoped it would be something a little more substantial than it looks.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like it could be a tense thriller that morphs into Wall Street intrigue. Maybe not great, but it could make for an enjoyable 90 minutes.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Regular religious films don’t float my boat. Religious parodies don’t float my boat. Religious movies of questionable intent really don’t float my boat.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): First film by a director with twenty years’ acting experience could be either hit or miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it could be fun, although it also looks like it could go off the rails at any moment.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It feels like it wants to be a comedy, but the trailer plays it straight. I don’t think it has figured itself out.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The reviews haven’t been great, but the concept, trailers and key art all give me hope that it will be a fun little unusual affair.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Film version of J.G. Ballard’s novel could be interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like it is anything but boring, so even if half of it doesn’t land it should still be worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Stunning visuals fill the trailer. Even if I am not certain where it is going, it does look interesting, if a bit over the top. It almost feels like Snowpiercer in a building rather than a train.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m really not the audience for this type of film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I have no interest in seeing a sequel to an action flick I never heard of in the first place.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like non-stop action.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It just looks like over the top violence, not my cup of tea.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is ultimately misleading, which kills my interest in the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Odd post-Easter release for a film set during the last days of Jesus’ life doesn’t bode well for success.
Tripp Burton (TB): A very interesting premise, and its good to see Ewan McGregor back in a significant role.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be an interesting take on Christ’s 40 days in the desert. Ewan McGregor looks like he has fun in the dual roles of Yeshua and the devil.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Curiosity is likely to get the better of me in this second film releasing this weekend with an unusual premise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dismal looking dystopian sci-fi is not my cup of tea.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have been waiting for this for almost a year, since last Cannes, and it looks like it is worth the wait.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): One rarely hears the term dystopian comedy, but this might be one. It has an interesting premise of people turned into animals if they can’t fall in love in 45 days. Hopefully it can maintain interest through the entire film.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m surprised this film hasn’t garnered more attention and interest. It’s flying way too low under the radar.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Could be a return to quality for Whit Stillman…or not.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting change of pace for Whit Stillman.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Lovely costumes and sets and what could be a witty version of a Jane Austen novel as written by Oscar Wilde. It does look fun.

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s a compelling narrative hidden in a sometimes muddy trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): World-wide festival hit from Mexico could be worth seeking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a wild ride.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not understand this trailer at all. The subtitles felt like they went to a different movie, one a thriller the other one about a woman trying to get her husband seen by the doctor.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Silly buddy comedy doesn’t look too appealing.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks unfunny and drab.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a truly bad remake of The Hangover, by one of the writers of Hangover 2. Skip it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer isn’t great, but the story might be worth a look.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m usually a fan of historical dramas but this one looks disappointing.
Tripp Burton (TB): Terence Davies is always a director worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Ravishing visuals in the trailer and great early reviews just do not add up in the odd trailer that gives little sense of what the movie will actually be about.
