Looking at the Weekend: May 18-20, 2018

The reign of The Avengers will be ended by a different Marvel property, this one from rival Fox. Deadpool opened to $132 million just two years ago on its way to $363 million total. The sequel has already gotten solid early response, which means a $100-plus opening is certain, which will be more than enough for a first place finish. How far up will it debut? It’s impossible to know, but $150 million or more wouldn’t be shocking.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With the actors involved, it could be quite a fun time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): All-star cast comedy looks amusing, but I’m not sure it’s any more than that.
Tripp Burton (TB): I wish that this film looked as good as the cast list does.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s a good cast, and it could be a funny film, but there is the possibility that it will be a big bust.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The original was a great deal of fun and early word is that the sequel is just as amusing, if not more so.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I enjoyed the first one and this looks like it could be more of the same demented kind of fun.
Tripp Burton (TB): I didn’t love the first movie as much as most people seemed to, so I’m a little more lukewarm on a sequel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I thoroughly enjoyed the first Deadpool film, so I am fervently hoping that they can recreate the fun of that in a sequel.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is instantly forgettable and I can’t imagine being excited about seeing it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed thriller from Paul Schrader looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard good things about this, and it is nice to hear that Paul Schrader is back doing what he does best.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer did nothing for me, but early reviews are quite strong, so it may be a sleeper hit.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer has some problems, but the premise is solid enough to possibly be engaging.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Child-centered Canadian horror movie appears to offer something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is not my cup of tea at all.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is an atmospheric trailer, but it devolves into typical horror mode by the end.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews have been mixed, but its strong cast may make seeing it worthwhile.
Tripp Burton (TB): I loved this book, and am weary and excited about an adaptation of it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While it did not boast the most exciting trailer, Saorise Ronan is a favorite of mine and some reviews are good.
