Does absence make the heart grow fonder? Does it heal old wounds? Or does it simply make you forget why you cared in the first place? After Men in Black 2 was a disappointment to many, it’s hard to think why anyone would want to cozy up to a new version. Yet, with so many years between, I think people will have forgotten how much they were burned the last time.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Chernobyl Diaries: You pretty much know what you should expect going in, so our thoughts aren’t going to change yours.
Men in Black 3: Our feelings towards the sequel are mixed with the consensus being that if it’s better than the middle chapter, it might be worth it.
Moonrise Kingdom: Fans of Wes Anderson rejoice! This is your movie without reservation. Strong reviews from Cannes may even make it an Oscar contender.

Thoughts

It’s the kind of movie that looks very vanilla on paper, which is why I’m not terribly enthused about the prospects.

Thoughts

Looks like another minor made-on-the-cheap horror flick.

Thoughts

It may be a solid horror film, but the Academy won’t remember its existence in 7 months.

Thoughts

I liked the first film, didn’t like the second film. Whether or not I see the second film depends on how well it’s received.

Thoughts

The first one was amusing enough, but I skipped the second, and will skip the third as well.

Thoughts

The technical aspects look strong, so it could sneak into a couple of below-the-line categories.

There are many Wes Anderson fans out there. I’m not one of them. I’ve seen a handful of his films and they seem to define what I find wrong with the indie genre. His movies tend to try and be quirky and, to me, seldom are. My viewership of the film will likely depend on whether Oscar takes it seriously or not.

Thoughts

Good reviews out of Cannes would seem to indicate this is one to seek out.

Thoughts

Wes Andersen is one of my favorite filmmakers, so I hope that this gets him back on the Academy’s radar.
