For a reason, only one film is releasing wide this weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 re-teams the cast of the original with a handful of new characters to deliver the second set of strong box office results for Disney so far this year. There’s no question it will be the number one film of the year. The only question is can it top $200 million in its opening weekend. My guess is that it won’t. Even Rogue One couldn’t. Three films so far have managed the feat, two were long-awaited follow-ups to past blockbuster and the third was the culmination of years of build up. Guardians may come close, but I suspect it will fall short. (Editor’s Note: The ratings and information below have been updated as of 5/3/17 at 7:00pm Central to include Thomas’ last-minute entries.)

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film was like the first rain of spring, a refreshing entry into the stagnating Marvel Cinematic Universe. While this film looks and sounds like more of the same, it will still be a welcome treat at the box office.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): With the same light touch, there’s no reason to think this one won’t have the same success as the original.
Tripp Burton (TB): The first film was a fun enough lark, so I’m looking forward to checking out the sequel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This should be fun, though not as enjoyable as the first one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The long-shelved trans seriocomedy comes at a time of renewed interest in the material. The reason it was shelved seems to be that it wasn’t very good to begin with. At least that’s how it looks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Excellent cast, important topic, but the film’s early reviews in September 2015 when it was called About Ray, weren’t kind.
Tripp Burton (TB): I can’t figure out how to feel about this film, so I will wait until I catch it on TV.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be a compelling movie about a trans character, though it sounds like it goes for easy laughs and does not dig as deep as it should.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Boxing dramas are common. Boxing comedies are rare. Boxing biopics about someone who few care about aren’t worth the time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): 2nd delayed Naomi Watts film this week with a title change (from The Bleeder) may be one too many.
Tripp Burton (TB): Boxing movies aren’t my favorite genre, so I’ll wait to see how the reviews are before committing to checking this out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The true story of the boxer who inspired the movie Rocky should be better than the reviews make it sound. Though Liev Schreiber should make it worth watching.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Oren Moverman is a talented filmmaker, but this film doesn’t look nearly as interesting as it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast, intriguing drama, but will a film centered around a dinner prove cinematic enough?
Tripp Burton (TB): This film was very divisive at Tribeca, but Moverman is usually an interesting filmmaker so I will give it the benefit of the doubt for now.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A strong cast and interesting concept should make for a watchable if not gripping movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from Debra Winger, this film looks like a bit of a bore.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It’s nice to see Debra Winger in a starring role again, but movies about old people in love are a hard sell.
Tripp Burton (TB): With a cast like this, The Lovers is easily my most anticipated film of the weekend.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A mature love story told well, according to the critics. It sounds like a worthwhile film.
