The previous film opened to $74 million two years ago on its way to $234 million. It was the lowest tally both for the Wizarding World films, but also the lowest opening. That doesn’t mean that this second film will underperform as well. Although the new series is not based on books that were wildly popular, the first film might have been an opportunity to whet the appetites of Harry Potter fans who may just turn out in stronger numbers for the second film. Unfortunately, the second film of the Harry Potter series did underperform the original and came in well below. However, it was also the fourth best inflation-adjusted numbers of the series. I suspect this film will fall right around the same tally for opening weekend and possibly slightly higher for its full-run tally. There is no other competition for number one this year.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This universe is fascinating and the first film, while flawed, held some interesting potential.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Follow-up to the first film in the franchise looks interesting if a bit convoluted.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m getting a little tired of the expanded Harry Potter universe.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first installment was fun. This has not gotten as good reviews, but I am still looking forward to it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are some funny parts in the trailer, but not enough to be genuinely unmissable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a dumbed-down version of what could have been a compelling film.
Tripp Burton (TB): This trailer is dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks cute, but also nothing we have not seen before.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s said to be a fine heist film with a twist on the genre and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated crime drama looks like a contender in several Oscar categories.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of the most anticipated films of the year for good reason.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a fun heist film, but I had thought it an Oscar contender before, but do not think so now.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Apart from the performance of Willem Dafoe, nothing in this film looks that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Willem Dafoe has a shot at an Oscar nomination as Vincent Van Gogh at the end of his life.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m really intrigued for this, and not just for Willem Dafoe.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): In many ways I am not looking forward to yet another film about Van Gogh, but hopefully this will rise above the pack.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like a formulaic exploration of race in the Deep South, which could result in strong performances, but the film doesn’t look that enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Genuine crowd pleaser should be a box office hit as well as a surefire awards grabber.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is a major Oscars contender this year, but I’m not overly excited to see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Going by the reviews, I want to like this more, but the trailer does not live up to its hype.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be interesting, but it’s something that can definitely wait to catch on home video.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jekyll & Hyde thriller could be interesting but the trailer is more than a bit tedious.
Tripp Burton (TB): There are too many other films to see right now..
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It might prove a decent thriller, but I am rather dubious.
