The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most successful in film history, making its prequel (of sorts), a likely box office success. While the film may not perform quite up to that series’ best films, it will still do amazingly well and easily top the box office for the weekend. None of the other titles will even come close. (EDITOR’S NOTE: Thomas submitted his ratings and commentary for the last three films on this list after publication. These entries have now been updated to reflect this.)

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Miles Teller is an actor whose mere presence in a film becomes a black mark on it. Add to that the fact that I’m not a fan of boxing films and you have a movie that holds no appeal to me whatsoever.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another boxing movie, despite strong reviews, may be one too many.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not a boxing movie fan, and this doesn’t look good enough to change that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be an interesting boxing picture, it certainly has a strong true story line, but it is just a genre that I am not that fond of, though its leads should be very good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailers have been hilarious, making this one of the films I’m most looking forward to this year.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Coming-of-age teen drama with good advance word.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks average at best.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer is fun, and if the movie can stay that animated, it could be the next Juno or Breakfast Club.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Harry Potter films were among my favorite fantasy pics on the big screen. Everything about this new iteration sounds exciting and the most recent trailers all look excellent.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): J.K. Rowling after Harry Pottter should be a box-office magnet.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a visually stunning extension of the Harry Potter universe.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may not be that exciting a trailer, but the early reviews are quite good, so this sounds like a good addition to the Harry Potter franchise.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like horror films, this trailer is somewhat offputting. It may still be a good movie, but it doesn’t quite pique my interests.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Somewhat intelligent looking horror movie is too gory for my tastes.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a hollow yet gorgeously made horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Supposedly a frightening and original horror film, a lukewarm trailer certainly did not make me interested in seeing it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A trailer that’s largely forgettable leads me to suspect the film may be as well, but the concept isn’t weak, just the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Chinese comedy doesn’t look like it would be very appealing in any language.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like an interesting foreign entry, but I can wait until its streaming to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks intriguing, but seems very different than the movie I read about. I am not sure what to expect.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): One of the year’s most eagerly anticipated films is a surefire awards magnet.
Tripp Burton (TB): Maybe my most anticipated film of the year since I heard about it at Sundance.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a winner of a picture, even if the overlying story sounds depressing. Reviews are great and the leads are supposed to be phenomenal. I’m looking forward to seeing this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although I have not seen Ford’s prior effort, the trailer is so gorgeous and stylish I can’t help but be interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Thriller with strong pedigree will probably get lost in the glut of year-end releases.
Tripp Burton (TB): I was surprised when I loved Tom Ford’s last film, but this looks a little too cold for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I was a big fan of Tom Ford’s first film, A Single Man, and am looking forward to this stylized thriller, though I am not sure what to make of the trailer. Michael Shannon probably has the best chance of copping an Oscar nomination from this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): After a name change, it’s hard to believe the film will do very well at the box office, especially since the trailer doesn’t give any idea that it will be different than its myriad forebears.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The retitled Bastile Day may hit too close to home to attract a large audience.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks horribly bland.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A rogue policeman and a pickpocket in the wrong place, it looks like a violent version of the typical odd couple film.
