There are two films with potential for topping the box office. The first is the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. One of the most celebrated and popular bands might prove a strong draw at the box office, but the film hasn’t gotten a lot of great reviews so far, suggesting that it won’t be as crowd-pleasing as it could be. The other is Disney’s latest fantasia, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The heavily hyped and advertised film has all the makings of a big box office draw for families who have had few opportunities to get to the cinema so far this year. I believe it will be an easy win for the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): My issue with this film stems from the rumors that it poorly reflects the life and loves of Freddie Mercury.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Underwhelming early reviews put a damper on the film’s awards prospects but not necessarily its potential box-office.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful, and I’ve heard dreadful buzz on it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I really want to like this film, but the reviews make it sound like more of a misfire than a great biography, though it sounds like Rami Malek is very good as Freddie Mercury.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I think it could be quite funny with Whoopi Goldberg, unsurprisingly, making it funnier.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another Tyler Perry comedy that looks like it’s trying way too hard to be funny.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not a Tyler Perry fan, but this looks like quintissential fun for his fans.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The culture clash between two sisters might be fun, but I worry that it will be more stilted than believable.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a gorgeous and fun film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The latest adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King looks visually splendid, but is it any good?
Tripp Burton (TB): Everytime I see this trailer it gets worse and worse. A strong Razzie contender I think.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks sumptuous like many Disney live action films of late, but The Nutcracker has never been my favorite ballet and I am not sure that expanding it out will help it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have a faint interest, but it’s not a subject I typically enjoy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like an overwrought satire.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is not my thing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I feel much too old to be the target audience for this film. If you are into battle rap then it might be for you.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m really not a fan of films about gay conversion therapy, especially ones that seem so maudlin.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated film about religious fanaticism and gay conversion therapy should be an awards magnet.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m dubious of this, but it looks like it is worth seeing merely for the performances.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not do a good job of selling the picture, but early reviews make this sound like a decent and touching film, though perhaps more important than truly feeling.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The subject of the film is of interest, but the film just doesn’t look that intriguing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Compelling biography of war correspondent Marie Colvin and her coverage of the Syrian Civil War looks like a hard sell.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting, but the fact that it is so under the radar makes me nervous.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While Rosamund Pike appears to give a fierce performance, the movie built around it does not look as interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I rarely watch Asian martial arts films, even supernatural-themed ones.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another Asian martial arts drama.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like fun, but in awards season, I’ll soon forget about it and it will fall thorugh the cracks.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Only hard core fans of martial arts films will be interested in this one.
