After the disappointing debut of Justice League last weekend, Coco should have a shot of taking the Thanksgiving crown in its sole-wide opening weekend. There’s the possibility that it under-performs since we don’t know how Pixar can do with characters that are all Hispanic in a very politicized climate, but a strong debut would be a good omen.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With few exceptions, Pixar releases are terrific, so it’s worth getting excited about.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Pixar charmer set in the Land of the Dead looks like a surefire Oscar contender.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like, if not top tier Pixar, at least another wonderful entry in their canon.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may not be the most exceptional Pixar film, but it sounds like a very good one with a strong story and beautiful animation. It will be the film to beat for Animated Feature.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It is one of the most acclaimed films of the year. It should be spectacular.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A film festival favorite, this is easily one of the year’s most highly anticipated films.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is one of the prime contenders for awards season, and I’m really looking forward to catching up with it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A lilting, if slow, trailer tantalizes a bit but does not do a great job of selling the film. Everything I have heard about it makes it sound like a lyrical and sensuous winner.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have yet to be disappointed by a Joe Wright film, so we’ll see how this one goes.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill is a surefire Oscar contender, it will interesting to see how many other nods it gets.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is another prime Oscar contender, and could be our Best Actor winner, and I’m intrigued to see what Joe Wright can bring to the biopic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This will make an interesting book-end to the summer’s Dunkirk, but with a much more human heart. Gary Oldman is said to be superb as Churchill and will lead the film towards a number of Oscar nominations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like unexceptional claptrap.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It might be lightweight, but bah! humbug! to anyone who doesn’t appreciate Dickens and Scrooge.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bland to me, and seems to be flying too far under the radar for any awards consideration.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks corny but enjoyable. Christopher Plummer should make an impressive Scrooge.
