Who will triumph, the dinosaur or the boxer? While both may come in second to Katniss Everdeen and the second weekend of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the top new release will either be Pixar’s second film this year or Sylvester Stallone’s latest Rocky franchise feature. I’m giving the edge to Pixar simply because of its history, but Creed could do pretty well for itself.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film was ok, but I’m not enamored with the franchise, so you’ll need to count me out of this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I’m skeptical of Sylvester Stallone’s chances of securing another Oscar nomination for this latest Rocky sequel, but the buzz is out there so take it with a grain of salt.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have little interest in any more Rocky films, and this “reboot” looks limp.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is hard to get excited about Sylvester Stallone reprising his Rocky persona yet again, though at least he is playing the coach rather than the fighter this time. It has decent reviews, but I have little desire to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t Pixar, I’d be overly wary of the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not my cup of tea, but a likely box-office hit for those who can’t get enough of cute dinosaurs.
Tripp Burton (TB): I will always be eager for new Pixar, and despite some grumblings I thought the trailer looked fantastic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Pixar generally produces a good film, but this one does not look like it will be one of their best. It should be worth seeing, just with lower expectations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t have quite the interest in this that I should, but I also don’t have any idea what it’s purpose is.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The Frankenstein tale told from Igor’s perspective seems more than a bit silly, but the director has four TV Sherlock movies under his belt, so I’m intrigued.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks ill-conceived all around.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Somehow yet another reboot of Frankenstein, albeit with good actors, does not excite. It looks like they pile on the gore in this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It doesn’t look that good and early word is it isn’t, but Eddie Redmayne seems to be continuing his early buzz for a Best Actor nomination.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early awards buzz has slowed a bit, but I’m confident the film will earn recognition in at least a few categories.
Tripp Burton (TB): The trailers look stale, but there is some Oscar buzz surrounding it, so I will probably feel inclined to check it out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like a beautifully acted and filmed drama about one of the first transsexuals to have surgery. Eddie Redmayne shows that he has more than just one Oscar-worthy performance in him.
