Thor: Ragnarok will destroy its competition this weekend. The first film opened to a soft $65 million. The second film easily topped it with $85 million. Will there be a twenty-million jump again? I doubt it. I suspect the film will top its prior film for opening weekend, but not move too much further up the charts. It’s competition, A Bad Moms Christmas opens two days earlier, which means its opening weekend numbers will slump. The first film opened to $23 million before climbing to $113 million. I suspect both numbers will be missed, probably by wide margins.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The original movie was predictable, but entertaining. This sequel looks about as interesting as its predecessor, so could be worth watching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A bit too trashy for my taste.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never saw the first oneโ€ฆ
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a pretty good cast is wasted on middling (at best) material. If the title appeals, than you might like it. Everyone else should probably avoid it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Thor films have been my least favorite of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and although there are a lot of elements to this film that look fun and exciting, I can’t help but be cautious.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strictly for fans of the franchise.
Tripp Burton (TB): Thor has been my least favorite of the MCU characters, but this film looks so out there that it may be worth catching up with.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like some much needed humor was added into this Thor picture, which is good. The reliance on CGI fights with various other Marvel Universe stars looks less exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film has an interesting premise, but that might not be enough to make it a good movie.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The 100th film by the film’s prolific martial arts director might be worth a look.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It may be the 100th film by director Miike, but I still have no interest in seeing it. The twist of having a samurai who cannot die might make it better, but I will still pass.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m fascinated by the premise of this film and think it has a great deal of potential. The limited release worries me, though.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another horror film.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a dreadful horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have never been a horror buff, and this looks quite unpleasant. The idea of the murders being streamed live might add some interest in this day and age, but it is still one I won’t be seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Greta Gerwig is one of those actresses that cinephiles seem to love, but whom I haven’t yet become enamored with. She might not be a bad director, though and with Saiorse Ronan, that could be enouh.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): One of the year’s best reviewed festival hits and a strong Oscar contender.
Tripp Burton (TB): I adore Greta Gerwig, and from the sound of things, she is just as great a director as she is an actress and writer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not excite me, but everything I have heard about this makes it sound wonderful, with strong performances from Saiorse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A lot of cineastes adore everything Richard Linklater does, but apart from the Sunrise trilogy, I just haven’t been too impressed with his work. This film looks like the worst of his efforts and that makes it even less appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quasi-sequel to The Last Detail came up short at various film festivals but should still be worth a gander.
Tripp Burton (TB): I was looking forward to this a lot, but the festival buzz wasn’t good.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer and the early reviews make this sound like more a miss than a hit, but perhaps the cast will liven it up some.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A dreadful makeup job and a vainglorious performance don’t make this film seem that appealing
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Surprisingly, Lyndon Johnson has never had a theatrical film in which he is the main character – if nothing else, this will fill that void.
Tripp Burton (TB): I don’t need another LBJ biography right now, especially with a mis-cast looking Woody Harrelson.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): None of the actors look much like the real people they are portraying, and the trailer did little to interest me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’ll admit that I’m a bit fascinated by Jeffrey Dahmer as a serial killer and it might be interesting to see more about his origins, but the Jeremy Renner version of Dahmer was already interesting enough. I’m not sure there’s enough material to delve into the subject again.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Creepy looking film about the high school life of the future serial killer might be worth seeing…once.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a misguided film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not sure what to make of this film. They are trying to humanize Jeffrey Dahmer, which might not be a bad thing, but it does not look like they pull it off. It just seems sort of distasteful.
