This weekend it’s James Bond versus Charlie Brown, a combat no one ever would have thought would take place. James Bond has the edge simply because it’s a huge, long-legged franchise and The Peanuts Movie may have kid appeal and legions of adult fans, but it just doesn’t sound like an out-of-the-gate blockbuster.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film doesn’t look that appealing to me, but it could be better than expected.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks to be one of the year’s better animation features.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love the Peanuts, and even if this doesn’t look up to par with their older stuff, I’m still excited to see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks fairly cute, though it is hard to imagine that it will be much better than the television features we get to see for free.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): My only real interest in this film is that it’s part of a franchise I like. The last film almost put me off the franchise and early notices don’t strike me as a good sign.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The latest Bond adventure should be interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I wasn’t as excited about Skyfall as everyone else, but this could still be a strong Bond entry.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Daniel Craig has been a good Bond, so this should be a better than average shoot-em-up with unbelievable special effects.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not much else looks incredibly good this year, but this one has a lot of promise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Advance word on the film began with Sundance last January and has been building ever since. It should be a big player in this year’s Oscar race.
Tripp Burton (TB): This could be a major Oscar player, and I’m excited to see it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a lovely period piece of a young Irish woman’s move to America, a job and a possible boyfriend. Saorise Ronan is said to be spectacular in the lead. It looks like a winner.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks dreadfully pretentious.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast looks wasted in David Lynch-lite atmosphere.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not really sure what to make of this…
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is billed as an existential comedy, but nothing about it makes me want to go see a film about the life of an obnoxious comedian.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Reason enough to see it is Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The next generation Beaches – looks lame.
Tripp Burton (TB): Not my thing, but it looks well-made enough to be worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A best-friends comedy where one life is going well and the other has medical problems. Seen this before and probably better.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): A critical success through the film festivals – should be a major awards magnet.
Tripp Burton (TB): I can’t wait for this, supposedly one of the frontrunners for a lot of awards this season.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This seemingly has become the front runner for the Best Picture Oscar and the story of the Boston Globe exposing the priest scandal looks to be an interesting film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Based on discredited information and looking rather uninspired, the cast is the only reason I have any deasire to see this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): What might have been something special looks to be dumbed down to half-heated satire.
Tripp Burton (TB): Some shameless awards chasing going on here, and the film doesn’t look up to snuff.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like it could be an interesting film as Trumbo was quite a character during an interesting if disturbing time in our country’s history. It should be Oscar bait, but it feels like it is flying under the radar.
