For the second weekend of November, a trio of potential box office champions are releasing with only one of those seeming to be a likely chart topper. Likely coming in third behind the second weekend of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Girl in the Spider’s Web changes directors and cast and skips book to present a new Lisbeth Salander movie. While fans of the book series will probably have no problem giving it a go, those who were fans of the David Fincher version will likely be disappointed. That gives J.J. Abrams-produced Overlord a chance to make a run for third at the box office this weekend. The film doesn’t feel like the kind of movie that excels at the box office, but it’s different enough from everything else out there, it could be a success. The third film, however, is probably going to take the box office crown. The creators of the Despicable Me series take on Dr. Seuss’ most legendary characters, The Grinch. This animated feature fills a void at the box office for animated films and should do quite well, topping Bohemian Rhapsody after its 55% drop-off.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If David Fincher’s not involved, I’m not sure that it will be worth the effort.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I enjoyed the original Swedish trilogy as well as the Hollywood remake of the first one, hope this is just as good.
Tripp Burton (TB): I like both the book series and all the movie adaptations, but I’m not sure we need another Lisabeth Salander movie
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Although I am looking forward to seeing Claire Foy play such a different character than Queen Elizabeth, the movie’s plot involving her sister feels a little far fetched.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a rather tepid re-telling of an oft-adapted Dr. Seuss classic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Seasonal story could be a box-office bonanza.
Tripp Burton (TB): This trailer annoys me, but my kids find it hysterical.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Since there already is a version of The Grinch that we all grew up with and love, this remake feels pointless.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The zombie-driven horror period drama doesn’t look that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Should appeal to old-fashioned horror film buffs.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks entertaining enough.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Nazis may have been horrific, but I do not think that creating zombie soldiers, so something similar, was part of their plan. To me this just looks bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s nothing in the trailer that looks that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Argentinian biopic about a baby-faced serial killer should appeal to those looking for something different.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks intriguing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): He is a pretty psychopath and while the story is based on true events, I am not sure I want to see this.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Although the film hasn’t gotten a lot of advanced press, seeing Hugh Jackman take on the role of disgraced presidential candidate Gary Hart could be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hugh Jackson is a long-shot Oscar contender for this overdue biography of Gary Hart.
Tripp Burton (TB): I am really excited to see this, even if the festival buzz died off pretty quickly.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of Gary Hart and his self-destructive campaign for president should make an interesting film, though early critics are not totally in favor of it. I wonder if it would have done better coming out before the midterm election.

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something fresh and fascinating about the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): British film about a London rent boy with delusions of grandeur looks pretty but empty.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure where this film is going, but the trailer made it seem intriguing if unbelievable.

Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a generic cop thriller.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like it turns into the typical revenge fantasy.
