With five films releasing this weekend, it will be difficult to pick a film to top the box office. It’s entirely possible that Taken 2 will do enough business in its second weekend to top the box office again. Of the new releases, the two that have the best chance of topping Taken are Argo and Sinister. The latter is a horror film that may pique the interest of fans as October moves towards Halloween; however, I think Ben Affleck’s third film may find a broader audience than might typically be expected for a period film. Affleck has developed a reputation as a strong director and the film is being marketed quite well. I think it has the best chance of topping the box office this week if it can must a sizable debut.
Consensus
Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on.
Argo: It’s one of the big events of the year and if you liked Ben Affleck’s prior two directorial effors, it sounds like this one won’t disappoint.
Here Comes the Boom: This is a popular genre with audiences, but not with critics. See at your own peril.
Seven Psychopaths: Martin McDonagh’s earned acclaim in the past and critics seem to be lining up behind this one.
Sinister: We’ve seen it before and we’ll see it again.
Middle of Nowhere: Only a Sundance prize keeps this from being instantly forgotten and even then it isn’t a guarantee.
What to See
A new format is on its way. Until then, the What to See article that normally posts on Friday will now be included here.
Wesley Lovell: In wide release, there’s nothing more important to see this weekend than Argo. On the limited release side, I’d recommend Nobody Walks. Argo is a huge Oscar contender from a blossoming director. Nobody Walks seems to be a compelling relationship drama with a strong cast.
Peter J. Patrick: In wide release, Argo is one of the year’s most anticipated films and a surefire Oscar contender. It’s must see. In Limited Release, none.
Tripp Burton: In wide release, Argo has the best buzz around it, and has the possibility of being one of the year’s most cited films. In Limited Release, none of them are my cup of tea, but if you find one that looks good, go support a small film!

ThoughtsKevin James is ending up in the Adam Sandler category: comedians I don’t find funny and to whom I wouldn’t give the time of day. |
ThoughtsLooks like an Adam Sandler comedy without Adam Sandler. With or without it’s not my cup of tea. |
ThoughtsThis genre of film will attract a lot of supporters, but they won’t be Oscar voters. |

ThoughtsFound footage films aren’t my thing, nor are they Oscars, but they are still popular and cheap enough to keep being made over and over again. |
