Three films in release and three films that could be solid performers at the box office. Goosebumps 2 is the sequel no one asked for, so I suspect it won’t come close to the top, possibly not even the top 5. That pits Bad Times at the El Royale, a stylish noir thriller against Damien Chazelle’s La La Land follow up about Neil Armstrong and the U.S. space race to put him on the moon. Early reviews are excellent, though there’s already been manufactured negativity towards the film because of its seeming lack of patriotic symbolry (specifically, the American flag). Ultimately, it will be for naught as the film is likely to do incredibly well in its opening weekend. El Royale may suffer a fate similar to Hotel Artemis as hyper-stylized violent films aren’t exactly hugely popular right now.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not only does it look stylish, it boasts a terrific cast.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Intriguing cast in stylish looking thriller.
Tripp Burton (TB): Drew Goddard has gained my trust with The Martian and Cabin in the Woods, so I can’t wait to see what he does with this wild idea.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It boasts an attractive cast and the trailer has a certain noir appeal, but the jumpiness of the trailer left me cold and unsure about this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I wasn’t as impressed with La La Land as others, so I’m a bit underinterested in this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A bona fide crowd pleaser about the real life event that captured the imagination of the world nearly 50 years ago.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks as thrilling as the festival buzz around it suggests it is, and should be one of our major awards contenders this year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Director Damien Chazelle has directed two Oscar-winning films, and this should be a major player this year. The trailer is not the most exciting, perhaps since we know the outcome, but the early reviews are strong.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had no desire to see the original, and no desire to see its worse-looking sequel.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Kiddie Halloween movie is no Wizard of Oz.
Tripp Burton (TB): I never saw the original, and my kids have no interest in this series, so I won’t bother checking this one out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not see the first Goosebumps movie which at least boasted Jack Black. The effects look decent, but it looks incredibly generic.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The cast makes it look good, but the trailers don’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks more like an actors’ showcase than a groundbreaking film of substance, but one worth seeing.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve heard good things about the performances here, but I feel like I’ve seen this story told many times before and I’m not anxious to sit through it again.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This film probably gives Timothรฉe Chalamet, and to a lesser extent Steve Carell, a second chances at an Oscar nomination, but the trailer did a poor job of making it seem that interesting.

Wesley Lovell (WL): Thanks, but no thanks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Film about the “grandfathers” of fitness looks more than a little sappy.
Tripp Burton (TB): I have no interest in this.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of the start of the fitness movement could make for a fun picture, but the trailer makes it look incredibly dull.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As interesting as Oscar Wilde is, this film looks a bit wan.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This fourth (at least) bio of Oscar Wilde looks interesting, but like the others, will likely fall short of awards recognition.
Tripp Burton (TB): This doesn’t look like it quite lives up to the promise that the last days of Oscar Wilde offer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): In an obvious labor of love, Rupert Everett directs and stars as Oscar Wilde. It should be amazing, but I worry that it will not amount to much.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is most fascinating and the trailer suggests it may pull it through well.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a minor league Carrie.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks bizarre, and I’m not quite sure if that is in a good way.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a better than average psychological thriller/horror film, but the teen angst has been done many times before.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a funny, timely comedy.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a good premise poorly executed.
Tripp Burton (TB): I love this premise, but I wish it were in more trusted hands than Ike Barenholtz, who tends to annoy me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The film takes an interesting and topical political premise, but it looks like it gets buried under foul and gratuitous language and then gets totally lost.
