Looking at the Weekend: Oct. 13-15, 2017

Before the solid, but unspectacular debut of Blade Runner 2049, I would have said all of this week’s films were likely second fiddles. Now, it’s possible that The Foreigner manages to supplant Blade Runner. It’s also possible that everything bombs or Blade Runner has a good hold-over, which would put the others below it.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): I haven’t been enamored with a Jackie Chan film to date and this looks like a fairly rote one. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylish retread of Death Wish might have its moments, but it’s not something I’d rush out to see. Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a solid action film, but there is too much other stuff to check out these days. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not used to Jackie Chan being serious in action films, but, if you like the genre, then it might be worth catching.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Slasher films have been in decline and it’s easy to see why. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Clever combination of Groundhog Day and Halloween might be a notch above the usual horror dreck. Tripp Burton (TB): This is a clever premise for a horror film, but I’m still not rushing out to it. Thomas LaTourette (TL): At first the concept of Groundhog Day with a dark twist sounded interesting, but I was bored with it by the end of the trailer.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): It seems like Chadwick Boseman has become the default depicter of all manner of historical figures. Too bad this one looks so generic. Peter J. Patrick (PP): I was expecting a more involved look at Future Justice Thurgood Marshall than just an examination of one of his early cases. Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a dry, straightforward biopic of a man who deserves better. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I gather he led an interesting life, but the trailer plays more like an action hero movie than a stirring bio-pic, so it may be an odd film.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): My interest in the subject matter is hindered by how dull this trailer looks. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Biographical film about the man and two women behind Wonder Woman looks intriguing. Tripp Burton (TB): This is a story I’ve wanted to see on the big screen for a while, but I’m not sure if it is being done justice. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The backstory of the creation of Wonder Woman should make for a fun movie, especially after the success of the Wonder Woman film this summer. Hopefully it will be as good as that one.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I like Andrew Garfield, this film looks like a fauxspirational Biopic of the Week. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Oscar loves films about the disabled and this one looks to be the latest in a long line of them. Tripp Burton (TB): I expected more from Andy Serkis’ directorial debut than something that looks this familiar and flat. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The true life story of a polio victim who bucked the odds and lived longer than expected is buoyed by two strong performers, though the filmmaking itself sounds a little weak.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): A biography of A.A. Milne and his son. It looks quite overplayed. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low key biography of AA Milne and his family will probably do better on home video than in its theatrical run. Tripp Burton (TB): Another story I’ve always thought would make an interesting movie, but this trailer looks painfully dull. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of A.A. Milne and the son he made famous gets a Hollywood treatment. It actually looks pretty good.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): Jim Sheridan has rarely made an uninteresting film and while there are some generic elements here that cause me to worry, it overall appears like it might be worth watching. Peter J. Patrick (PP): How does 5’3 Rooney Mara age into 5’11 Vanessa Redgrave? Looks like one of Jim Sheridan’s lesser works. Tripp Burton (TB): Jim Sheridan is a great director, but this doesn’t look like one of his most intriguing projects. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Great cast, interesting story, but the reviews make is sound like a total misfire.
