Ben Affleck’s espionage-style actioner should be able to topple the teen-targeted superhero drama at the weekend box office. Whether The Accountant can also beat the second weekend of The Girl on the Train is uncertain.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It reminds me a great deal of The American, which suggests I might just enjoy it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking thriller could be a surprise hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): This seems like a really well acted thriller, and one that I will wait to check out On Demand in a few months.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have a feeling that the film will be better than the trailer, but the trailer does not make we want to run out and see this Ben Affleck starrer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I tire of superhero films sometimes and this being a teen-targeted one, meaning it probably isn’t that great, I can’t help but be fascinated by it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sci-fi actioner with a Spider-Man vibe looks good.
Tripp Burton (TB): Any film that gives story credit to a toy company scares me away.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This just looks like a very silly superhero film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A strong cast from a strong filmmaker. I’ll definitely be interested in catching this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Episodic independent film probably works best on TV.
Tripp Burton (TB): Kelly Reichardt is an interesting filmmaker, but this one doesn’t jump out at me like some of her earlier efforts did.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The early reviews are great, but a slow moving trailer that gives no idea of what the film is about does not entice me to see this.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Man-against-man in the most stark and unforgiving climate. It might not be bad, but I’m not impressed enough with the trailer to put it high on my priority list.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Border patrol thriller looks like we’ve seen it all before.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks very interesting, but not as urgent as some of the other films out right now.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The two leads have been good in other work, but this looks exceptionally unpleasant.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like the Godzilla films well enough, but not enough to catch this limited engagement in the theaters.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): As far as Godzilla movies go, this looks good.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m not sure I need another Godzilla filmโ€ฆ
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m not sure about this one. It could be entertaining, there is some effective imagery in the trailer, but it sounds like a talky version, which is probably not good in a monster movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Firmly admitting my bias against Japanese animated films, this doesn’t look half bad, but it also doesn’t look half good either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Appealing looking animated feature.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks nice.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an interesting look at a father and daughter pair of artists, though the animation looks a little iffy, though the images that are reminiscent of Hokusai’s work were beautiful.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I forgot the film not long after I saw the trailer. That doesn’t bode well for its quality, but it’s an even worse problem for its publicity.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Violent looking thriller could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks generic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A man unwittingly stumbles into a human trafficking ring, this should be a decent premise, but it did not look like that good a film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Formulaic, cheesy, and unrealistically optimistic. Family holiday dramas can work when done well. This one doesn’t seem to be of that variety.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): One-note comedy doesn’t look very appealing.
Tripp Burton (TB): A clever concept, but I wish they could have gotten a more interesting cast.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A decent cast looks wasted in this movie where everyone’s phones die. It is meant to be touching, but it looks hokey.A decent cast looks wasted in this movie where everyone’s phones dies. It is meant to be touching, but it looks hokey.
